Help needed with a starting issue.

2004 l322 4.4

Key in ignition turn to start , no green green selector on the dash cluster.
The orange display down on the centre console is working fine.
Cycle the gear stick back and forward and sometimes it will display P to allow to start, other times is displaying D when in park.

Key in ignition turn to start no display showing on the green gear selector, leave the key turned and after a few seconds the car will start.

Any ideas.

What's is the remedy, what causes the delay in starting.

Is it not the same switch that signals the display on the console that is working fine?

Should be an easy fix. You will need to dive under your Rangey and locate the link between the gear selector and the auto box housing. The offending item will be a thick white plastic washer (approx 15-20mm in diameter but I'm thinking from memory only). This houses a small metal tube that allows the gear selector to activate the push rod which moves the auto box switch.

You will need to remove the plastic washer from its mount before removing the small metal cylinder from the washer, ensuring you remove the rust first and then lube accordingly. Replace the mechanism and Bob's your uncle, the auto box will work again.
