hi guys im new to the forum and would appriciate some help
i started my l322 2004 v8 this morning and stood in front of it having a fag whilst scaping the ice from the light and after 2-3 minutes i noticed a pool of oil gushing out from underneath so i quickly turned the engine off. from underneath it apeared to be coming from the rear of the engine on the drivers side and it wasnt a drip it was pouring! (at least 5 litres) as im no mechanic i called my cousin who is and has been for 20 years and he called round to look he wiped oil from around the rear of the sump and botom of the gear box area but could not see where it could have came from! so we put 5 litres of oil in which brought it to the correct level on the dip stick and started her up with him laying underneath and on top down the side down the back and after 2 hours running there has not been another drop of oil spilt . my wife and i have a four month old baby and we dare not risk using the car until theres an explanation please help.

oil cooler pipes seem ok. theres one pipe that i dont know were it goes it conects to the sump on the corner via a banjo but couldnt feel were it goes from there?

Kin ell, I think I'll pass on getting my L322 next year and keep my trusty V8 P38!
For me the P38 has been the epitome of reliable motoring.

had it four years and the only other problems ive had are radiator (thats because its made of paper!) and waterpump apart from that awsome

The pipe with the banjo bolt will be the drain back to the sump for the engine crankase ventilation system. Do you think that maybe the PCV system had frozen up causing the oil leak and then subsequently thawed out again? It might be worth checking that the two PCV hoses on top of the engine towards the back (under the acoustic cover) look okay.

the pvc pipe seem ok unless they had split and resealed them selves? i took it to hartwell land rover today they presume that the breather pipe may have frozen? and the oil came from the cam cover gasket under pressure, although its not leaking at all at the moment. i must admit im not convinced!!!! they have quoted me £212 to replace it. it literally lost 5 litres of oil in 2-3 minutes surely the gasket would still be leaking if it had failed?

think ive sussed it?????? the pipe that comes away from the sump (plastic) and then splits into two, one approx 10mm and one approx 5mm. both route around to the top of the gear box area and change to rubber pipes they connect to the breather can which i pressume was frozen with the condensation inside and the rubber pipes have perished thus f.......... great hole for the oil to escape. i have ordered the parts from lrparts who were extremly helpful and emailed me the micromat diagrams so i could choose the parts myself. thank god i didnt waste my £212 at the dealers changing a cam cover gasket that was not faulty!!!!!
