Hi Guys
From reading on here our gearbox's are a weak point, and seems to come from them being sealed for life. There is obviously a way to drain and fill up so would a gearbox service be worth looking into to prolong the life of our boxes? Would an oil change in sync with a normal service help or is this over kill?
Rob

i have just changed mine mate, it took around 6 litres of oil and took about 1 hour to do, the oil that come out was very dirty and smelt very burnt so its well worth changing it for what it cost ..

Make sure you use Esso/Mobil ATF LT 77411, it's what's recommended for the ZF box, I did a transmission fluid change recently and wouldn't risk using other oils, the only downside is the stuff is nearly £20 a litre from a LR dealer but it can be found online for less.

That's the one, sorry was typing that number from memory and got as far as Esso ATF LT then got the number wrong:doh:

Hi RRFan,
I have a td6, whicj is the correct oil for me ?
your advice would be much appriciated.
thanks

i asked a dealer and an independant about this, and was advised not to do it as its 50 /50 if the car will drive again. they are sealed for life, and there is a reason for that.. both said that more often than not they have had to rebuild as car wont drive once its been changed.. dont shoot me, just repeating what i was told. as i thought it might be worth doing

Interesting but the actual manufacturer of the gearbox doesn't think it's "sealed for life" as someone else has said, I this the 'boxes fitted to the L322 was a stitch up job by BMW to ensure unreliability, they are simply not up to the job. Change your fluid every 30K.

The GM 5L40-E transmission started life using Dexron III, progressed to Texaco Texamatic 7045E , then Texaco ETL 8072B and now Dexron VI. Land Rover will sell you 7045E @ £18.78/litre.

Frequent changes may delay the onset of the inevitable valve block wear, resulting in reduced pressures and torque converter lock-up clutch failure, but generally the life expectancy of this transmission in the TD6 L322 is between 80k & 100k miles.

i cant see how a fluid change would make anything worse. otherwise why would you bother changing the engine oil then ? lol

i have found the texaco 7045e online for £70 for 20L - enough to flush it through. im just trying to find the right advice and guides for changing it as i dont want it get it wrong !

i hear its a bit awqward to fill the box back up as the prop or something is in the way ???

thanks
