L322 EWS immob location?

Hi

a customer of mine who's L322 Range Rover i sometimes do the odd job on has asked me to do him a new key. Now i know it has the BMW EWS module fitted & i've done quite a few BMW keys that use EWS.

The problem i've had is locating the EWS in the L322. I looked in the same place that it's fitted in the BMW's which is up above the pedals behind the dash but couldn't see it.

An auto elec i know says it's under the handbrake in center console so my customer removed some trim but he said he could only find a black box & no sign of a white/cream box which is what the EWS usually is, unless it's different in Range Rovers

Did you come right with programming a key on it after locating the EWS?
Can one use the same EWS programmer that is used on the BMW cars for eg. AK90?

If possible could you say which landys use the EWS system?
 
Hi. sorry for the late reply. Don't get on here much!

I managed to program the new transponder ok with my BMW EWS editor software. I've been to do 3 others since. Managed 2 of them but couldn't do the 3rd. The immob box looked just like an EWS box but didn't say EWS on it. I opened it up to look at the circuit board & i didn't recognise it & not of my adapters would connect to it.

I called tech support for 1 of my key programmers & gave them the reg. They told me it had a different system which non of my equipment worked with. It was a L322 2006 Vogue.

So far i've done 2000-05 L322 that use EWS. I know 2000-04 Freelander used EWS but also 2003-06 Freelander uses SAWDOC system so you get a cross of with years on this model.

I've just had somebody phone with a 2003 Freelander wanting a spare key. Which is why i've come on here today, need to find out where the EWS/SAWDOC module is so he can check it for me to see which system it has before i quote him

The EWS is located under the gear selector console, on the drivers side (RHD vehicles). The 2006 & on facelift cars switched to a different EWS & are not programable with the BMW tool, at least to the best of my limited knowledge. About 10-15mins worth of dismantling to get at the EWS, although 1st time will take twice as long at least. Only tool needed is a couple of torx drivers.
 
why do you have to get at the ECU to program when you can just program a new transponder with the right diagnostics kit ?

How much does that diagnostic kit cost? I rarely do Range Rovers etc. Probably done 4 this year. I hardly think it would be worth me spending on more equipment for something I do very little of
 
£1k plus! definitely not worth me spending the money for the amount i do. It'd take me years to get my money back on that. I've happily spent a lot more than that on equipment for other makes of vehicle such as VAG because i do a hell of a lot more of them.

I bet i've done not far off 100 VAG keys this year so far & with the group buys i've got organised on a few VAG forums for next month i'll be adding another 30+ keys to that
 
There is a guy called Daveo, from London, who can program the EWS for you, you need to remove it from the car and send it to him, unless you're in a position to take the car to him. It's a whole lot cheaper than spending £1K+ on the appropriate diagnostic kit. He can be found at the end of the following link:-

If you just wanted a key programming you'd pay the £200 for the dealers to do it for you lol

I was just saying that my already purchased faultmate can do the program function
I didn't buy it just to program a new key lol
 
Sorry 2.0 Hippo and you are correct, just couldn't warrant the cost of such a fine piece of kit myself.

Did have an IID tool and it was a wonderful widget to have, but not capable of key programming:-(
 
I always wanted one but like you, couldn't warrant the cost....

But ended up swallowing the cost in the end. Worth the dollar though, such a great bit of kit ! :)

i'd never pay the dealer when you could pay somebody else that does keys almost half of that & save yourself some cash! :D
