Do we have a definitive guide for buying an L322, all variants?

Seeing quite a few posts about folk buying them and questioning the decision - just wondering if we have a thread somewhere with the relevant info and things to check if you're going to look at one.

.. For everyone, obviously, but also because I may be tempted to add a newer RR to the fleet.

I always thought the tdv8s were good but the 3.0td6 and their boxes were crap.
The 4.4 TDV8 isn't too bad but the 3.6 suffers from far too much to be a good motor..

Turbos
EGR's
Headgaskets
Fuel pumps
Oil leaks
not worth it, and all the parts listed above usually have a 4 figure price and labour attached to them..

And they're not economical either..

Is that list more specific to the 3.6? And consensus would be to purchase 2006 on? What's wrong with the pre 2006 models?

Also, dunno about you, but I don't think anyone ever buys a rangerover because they're economical :p

The M62TU v8 is a boat anchor and the gearbox is crap
The M57 is a good motor but the gearbox is crap
The electronics on the earlier examples can be alot more troublesome, as can the suspension "in my experience"

Post 2006.

You get the AJV8 which is a fantastic motor which unlike the M62 doesn't have to be pulled apart every other weekend it lasts and rarely if ever has to come apart.

The M62 has timing chain and guide rail issues, the Vanos is crap and if it has over 80k without history it and the guides have to be done cylinder bores are another issue

The AJv8 also purrs like a kitten with no rattles whereas the M62 when in a rare instance it isn't apart sounds like a cement mixer even when it's "rarely" perfectly healthy.

The 6spd ZF is a great gearbox that can take a beating so long as it is maintained.

Early L322's are pish cheap to buy but if you have a strand of common sense you will get a younger better car for more money, instead of buying an old one cheaply and then trying to justify to everyone why sinking 20 grand into a car worth £1500 is a good idea..

What's the engine code for the 4.4tdv8?

Don't get me wrong, I love a petrol v8 (I've had a few, outside of the rover guise) but the idea of a v8 diesel does appeal.

No idea if this will work for you or not.
I meant, it's silly cheap but not without its issues. I'd avoid it myself but did pique my interest.

It's also not a Vogue or Supercharged.

AJV8 is 2006 - 2012
3.6 TDV8 2006-2010
4.4 TDV8 2010-12
Hi Henry, just wanted to add my addiction to the AJV8 as in my 2005 L322 Supercharged. Being a 2005 build has the pre 2006 interior design that I am happy with but some people like the slightly more modern trim level, unfortunately, the cost of Road Tax is almost double that of the 2005 registered cars. Generally equivalent to a years insurance. My advice, buy whichever Range Rover you’re happy driving so long as it’s got an AJV8 4.2 PETROL LUMP. I’m biased I know.

Tax is ludicrous

But the car is far better, so it a fair trade ;)

4.2 or the N/A AJ41 4.4 V8 are a great bet.
And that's 2006 - 2012?

Essentially, I want something that I would be 'safe' enough to drive the length of the country without issue.. And possibly full family to the North of Spain via France (ignoring fuel cost and the usual 'any well maintained car' , etc etc)
