Hi Everyone, new to this site been on as a guest a few times and can i just say what a very helpful bunch of guys you all are.

I was wondering if anyone can help with my question?

How difficult would it be to change the engine on my l322 4.4v8 for a direct replacement? is it a massive job? has anyone had it done or infact done one. Mine gave up the ghost last weekend cracked the block but ive just found another engine but before i part with the cash thought id ask if it is worth doing.

Regards Mick

Hi, its an 04, its a very clean and tidy car full service history done 89,000 miles no other faults just passed an mot with no advises early feb.

If you are handy with the spanners it should be OK....that beign said, it is a complex engine with a bucket load of sensors....I would think the hardest part would be lining up the front diff (if you have had the recall work this will make life easier) and lifting the engine out!

To be fair i've changed 1 engine before but that was in an escort cosworth but i would think a 100 times easier. I am seriously considering doing it myself but if it isnt too expensive then i would let an indy crack on with it.

If your replacement comes with a warrantee/guarantee (albeit 60days) you may find this could be void if you fit yourself (regardless of if you are a competent spanner man or not - their warrantee company will find any reason to not pay out!!)

Valid point! To be fair I've spoken to one Indy this evening, He charges £30+vat per hour but he said he couldn't give me an exact time scale because he's never done this engine swap before. I've been told it can take between 27-40 hrs to do.

Cheers mick

So it's 1950 for the engine + undetermined cost of fitting. But likely about a grand?
Still might be worth it. As it is, the car is worth about a grand in spares but about 5 grand as a runner.

Grand in spares ?!

Joking, most of the time range rovers are worth more in bits

Might tackle this myself, got the garage space and plenty of time. Break it never!! to good a car for that its mint..
