L322 L322 2004 Td6 RR Vogue - Intermittent 'Fuel System Error' message.

Happily driving my L322 when the 'Fuel System Error' message displayed and the engine just died. Managed to steer off the road and called the AA. At this point, the engine cranked fast but did not start. The AA mechanic arrived and removed part of the air input plastic pipework and squirted 'EasyStart' into the air intake whilst I cranked the engine on full throttle. It started! He thought that air had got into the system.

My local garage found a pinhole in the fuel pipe so replaced it and the two rubber pipes at each end. Today, it failed again. My son disconnected the fuel filter output pipe and got a small quantity of air out before diesel started to run. I cranked the enging and got a nice jet of diesel. Reconnected the pipe, would not start. Used the EasyStart and off she went. Got home OK.

Tomorrow I will check the ODB2 for any useful fault codes.

Now for the big question - what to do/check now?

Thanks for the advice. I have a copy of RAVE and having looked up the fuel system information and am more confused than ever. I have items on my L322 fuel system that do not appear in RAVE. I have uploaded two photos. Can anyone identify the parts indicated?

I have read many posts re L322 fuel systems. Still confused. Have I:

1. One or two pumps in my fuel tank?
2. Do I have a cylindrical second pump clipped somewhere to the underside of the L322?

As my problem is air getting into my system. How does it manage this if the pressure at the filter output is 3.6bar. Any poor connection, etc, would jet out fuel, not suck in air. Listening to the fuel filter and fuel cooler (?) with the ignition switched on, I swear I can hear air bubbles.

Not sure about the in tank pumps, I think there is one lift pump and a side to side transfer pump. There is an in line pump somewhere around the front of the nearside rear wheel arch. Air can be sucked in due to a cracked pick up pipe or possibly pin holes in the pipe between the lift pump and the in line pump.
The above is speculation as I have never had to deal with a pump problem on an L322, others will know a lot more.

Thanks for the ideas. I assume the 'lift pump' is the fuel feed out of the tank. Looks like a jack up and crawl around under the car, Oh joy.

Hi Gary,
I have also gotten into the same problem you have/had.I changed the High pressure pump and all was well,I also changed the Fuel Rail Pressure sensor and the problem has come back.The vehicle is able to start with quickstart!How did you resolve your problem with this Vehicle?Mine is L322 2005 TD6.Please share some advice if at all you did resolve the problem.
