L R access codes.

Hi, I have a 2000 TD5 fitted with ACE, SLS and HDC. When it was in the 4x4 place I use (trying to keep away from rip-off main agent) having the head gasket done recently, I noticed from behind that bumper/back end wasn't sitting horizontal. I was so pleased at finally having the head gasket fixed that it took me a few days to investigate.
After researching some on here I thought it might be an air bag gone so I took it back to my 4x4 place and asked them to investigate and hopefully repair.... their head mechanic also thought it was an airbag gone.
After a good inspection the owner told me that the airbags were fine and also the suspension/shocks etc and that it was the onboard computer that is not adjusting the air bag pressure on one side?, but he did not have the L R access codes to fix it so I needed to take it to a L R dealership.
1) Which access codes would he be referring to?
2) Is it possible someone on here could provide me with them please? (as I know you are a very knowlegable and kindly crew here.)
Thanks in advance for any help, as I really don't want to use the main dealership if I can help it.
By the way I live in south west France.
Riggy.

it's a lot more likely to be the ride height sensors.
your mate should have a diagnostic tool that will let him access it all, if not find someone who has

Hi geggs and thank you kindly for replying.
Not quite as easy as just getting someone else to do it tho'. Unfortunately garages with good mechanics are as rare as hens teeth over here, most just want to as my old mate Steve used to say...."fit new and forget".........which can work out ultra expensive, i.e. two L R dealerships quoted me over €3,000 for doing the head gasket and that probably would have been the final bill whatever, but the garage I found is very good and in the end it cost just over €1200....also every other 4x4 place and garage wouldn't touch a TD5 saying it was too sophisticated for them. Still a bit in the dark ages over here. Also my French technical vocabulary is not brilliant so finding a garage who has the patience to communicate over a problem like this is immensely comforting.
I digress.
The SLS will rise and fall via the dashboard button but there is a 8cm difference on one side all the time, does this fit in with your 'ride height sensor' diagnosis?.
Please have some patience with me as although I have a good diagnostic brain for things mechanical and taking bits off a modern vehicle is no problem, it's putting them back that frightens the life out of me.
Riggy.

Hi Riggy, as you will see I'm also in France.

My strong advice to you would be to buy a Nanocom handheld computer. They are specifically designed to work with TD5 engines and supplementary equipment and will be able to diagnose 99% of any problems you will have with your Disco.

Relating to the current problem, the Nanocom will give you access to fault codes on the suspension so that you can confirm that it is indeed a height sensor at fault.

I have no vested interests here, but Nanocom can be bought here:

http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/NEW...s/Nanocom_TD5_Diagnostic_Tool_inc_Cables.html although they can be purchased from loads of different places and the Nanocom website allows you to continually update the software as they bring out improvements.

and delivery will be only £5 !!!!

Absolutely essential for the TD5 owner.

Good luck

Dave (Limousin)

Ps The garage are bull-****ting you about LR codes !!!! The more you know yourself, the less crâp you need to take form others;)

PPS A new OE head gasket costs £25+vat plus a fitting kit of £45+vat !!!!!!!!!

Hey ooop Biglad,
thanks for the advice and just about to order one. I will cancel my appointment with Land Rover Tarbes until I have the tool and done a diagnosis.
Yes it would have been cheaper to do the head gasket myself but I don't have the confidence with modern electronically controlled vehicles to trust myself to put 'em back together properly, plus, with 60 years old staring me in the face and no garage or under cover barn I feel quite reluctant to roll around in wet and damp gravel for days on end.

Adrian
p.s. If you want the job, I will gladly drive up and pay you to do it!!!!:D

Hi Adrian, you may notice in my signature that I have a TD5 for sale - for all the reasons you spoke about.

Personally I think the early TD5's are very poorly designed and built vehicles. I have come to this conclusion after buying one to do up and finding that it is vastly over-complicated for the competance of the original design engineers, never mind the servicing network and DIYers.

I'll be sticking to TDi 300's myself.

My personal situation is almost identical to yours, in terms of age and facills, so I thank you for the offer of working on yours - but it'll be a big NO THANK YOU.

I really don't like working on TD at all.

Cheers and good luck

Dave
