Further to my post about my RRC gearbox deciding to only give me random
gears, "like an umbrella in a fox hole" as a mate described it today
after trying to select a gear. I will be attempting a rebuild.

I have most of the innards of another box, although i do not intend to
match different worn gears together, I want to buy a DIY kit from LEGS,
they were the only ones I had any sense out of today.

Has anyone ever dealt with them or had bits / service off them. They
seemed to genuinely want to help today and in turn want to give them my
business.........

Any opinions?

Dave

They are local to me, & I've had them do a replacement gearbox on a 200tdi
disco & gearbox plus transfer box on my sons 90, both were done exactly as
they advertise, my disco box failed on their first testrun so they had to
keep for another day to replace yet again , no questions asked & lent me the
bosses brand new Jeep (I KNOW) to get home in.
I have found them fair & honest.

Dealt with them a few years ago when I helped rebuild an LT77 gearbox
in a Disco. Bought a full kit including transfer box and it included
every bearing needed. All the gears were ok but the mainshaft was shot,
LEGS obliged by sending a replacement to Ireland the next day, superb
service.

Not to bad to rebuild, the Haynes comic got to the point where it says
"take the shaft to a garage to press the bearings off", we did it with
a 4lb club hammer and a pair of tyre levers! We were putting all new
bearings etc on so it didn't matter. Hardest part was getting casing
back on while holding all the selectors etc in the right place.

I personally had some rather poor service from LEGS when I had a Clutch fork
fail on a 200TDI gearbox in my Discovery that I had bought from them
reconditioned only two months earlier, they even fitted it.

I had problems the moment I left the factory as the gears were not selecting
correctly. I took it that it needed running in.

Anyway when I telephoned the gentlemen on the end of the phone was rather
unhelpful and when I asked about getting the cost of fitting the clutch fork
back, he said, "You can try." I was then promptly ignored for about a week,

Finally I got hold of the owner who asked me to send the clutch fork as they
fit a Brand New Four Piece Clutch (By definition this must include the
fork). It was covered with warranty, 12 months unlimited mileage. This was
only 2 months and I had done a mere 650 miles.

Anyway he sent me a rather interesting e-mail saying the clutch fork had
failed but he wasn't honouring the warranty. I asked for the clutch fork
back as I may need it for the County Court as evidence and he ignored every
phone call, letter and e-mail. I even asked what the four piece clutch
comprised of and I was never told.

It says on their website:- G
WE RE-ENFORCE THE CLUTCH ARM: Genuine Four part Clutch

I will never deal with them again - I am sure mine was just a one off bad
experience. However, in my case their warranty was worthless.

Ahhh well that was never explained to me - this was some three years ago. I
am sure that things are different now and they will offer excellent service.

They put a new engine in my HSE.
It was ready on time and at the price quoted, which was
about 1000 less than dealer, so, in fact, I've had very little
dealings with them. Drop. Collect. Happy.

It's usually the clutch arm, for LR anyway.

Thats good news then. I've just had the innards back from the "other"
old box and the gears are amazing. A new repair kit should have it back
in rude health. It's actually getting the bloody thing in again
afterwards that I'm not looking forward too. I may be asking for advice
again!! I take it that you got a way without and "special tools". A
mate has helped me out of a spot by lending me his 300tdi 90 with
massive intercooler, Wheeeeeeeeeeee. Any pointers to look for while
rebuilding would be appreciated

Thanks Again

i had a range rover gearbox fitted by them a few years ago .
gearbox i never had a problem with since .

the only thing i did do after collecting the car from them and driving
it home was to change the gearbox oil to dexron ATF because whatever
they put in was too thick for my box and i had problems changing gear
on way home , they must have used either synthetic or something like
jcb auto trans fluid which was thicker viscosity than the usually used
ATF .

after i changed to ATF it changed gear lovely .

as far as alans service went though i couldnt fault him and he even
gave me a courtesy car for 2 days , so i could do the 200mile drive
home and then back the next day to collect my car, no charge for the
courtesy car except my putting fuel in it .

you shouldnt have any problems with them and if by chance you do im
sure he will sort it out ASAP .

which 'box? the LT77 and R380 are supposed to run on ATF but run OK in
moderate temperatures on MT75 synthetic - in very cold conditions the shift
gets a bit heavy IME but this resolves itself for UK values of cold in a
mile or so once it's warmed up a bit.

ISTR that one rangie box (LT95?) runs on engine oil.
