knocking noise 1998 freelander EXI 1.8

First of hello all!
I have just bought a 1998 freelander 1.8exi with 81000 miles on the clock.I have a couple of questions for you that i hope you can help me with,First one is that i have noticed once or twice when pulling away from a stationary position i have heard a loud bang/thump coming from what i think is the rear of the car.Can anyone give me some pointers as to what this could be?Also it has a leather interior and the 2 front seats are slightly worn.Is there anything i can use on the leather to hide the age cracks in it and put it back to looking a bit better?Also the outside plastic trim is looking a bit dull and has lightened over the years.What would be the best product to use to put it back to its origional black colour?
All info would be appreciated.

if you can, take it back and buy something else

bushes, cracked rear chassis, both of which covered on this forum

I am a bit obsessed at the moment with rear props and diff, but just had the exact same problem, took the car out of 4 wheel drive by removing the prop & diff, car drives perfect with no knocking noises whatsoever, so back the the garage in the morning for a new diff - and another hefty bill!:eek: :eek: :mad:
 
Surely removing the rear diff or VCU would constitute a 'modification' and therefore be reportable to the insurance company?

Yes it is a notifiable modification. However as this thread is now 9 years old, and Samantha32 hasn't been on since January 2009!!. It's unlikely she'll still have the Freelander.

It is, and much excellent and accurate tech advice is available. And well done for searching, but some questions may be a bit out of date. It is often the custom to give the noobs a bit of banter first, toughen em up for life on the forum! ;) :)
