Swmbo and I had a great time in the USA where we visited my brother.

Ersatz and I had a great time footling around in BVH in the Texas sunshine.

Virtually every American we met was impressed by the "Cool Truck", a few even knew what it was!

Although we only actually saw one other land rover which was a nicely rebuilt ex MOD 110 with full canvas in white.

Well when I returned my starter motor was ready to collect from Rees and Allen.

This was what they were working on when I stopped by to pick it up.

Anyway, Easter weekend arrived giving me time to fettle SFF and get the starter back in and tested

Nice new bolts on the downpipe too, I had found one of the original three did not have a nut on it, ergo why it had been blowing.

I then decided that I may as well get the grease gun out and do all the nipples I could find.

As I also had a gallon of EP90 I then decided to try my Sealy Oil Syringe out and start to replace all the gear oils

Starting with the hubs, then axles.

Then I dropped all the oil from the main gearbox, apart from a metallic sheen there was nothing in the oil. So I dropped 2.5 pints in.

I then was a bit stumped by the transfer box, where I expected the oil level/filler plug was nothing. Apparently this is on the side of the S1 transfer case obscured by the handbrake.

I opted instead to pull the plate over the input shaft off and fill from there.

When I dropped the oil I did find a small bit of circlip, but nothing else in the oil. Again a metallic sheen but no sludge of ground particles, so after a good look through the top I dropped in another 4.5 pints of lube.

Then into the back garden with the pressure washer to clean the Brickill mud off.

The following weekend saw Me, Stutab, Swmbo and Sarah setting up and running the RTV at Roundhill Woods. Heres a few piccies of us playing with the site to ourselves on the Saturday.

Oooh look what just arrived at work this morning from Flexolite.

Now I can replace the old paper element oil filter and canister with a nice screw on/off modern filter.

I shall update update once its fitted at the weekend.

I also got a nice new set of H4 lights to replace the old units, just need a relay wiring in to handle the higher current

Hi All,

Success, I drained the oil from SFF today, removed the canistor filter and installed the new unit from Flexolite. I can confirm that it arrived with the correct threaded bolt / feed pipe and it screwed in without a problem.

Trying to get a good photo to check that it was centred on the oil seal was hard, I have fallen foul of a missalignment in the past

After a test run of the engine the filter was warming nicely and no oil was dribbling. I need to take it for a run but the Oil Pressure light did not flicker, so it seems oil pressure has been improved, though that could just be due to fresh oil and filter.
 
Well an eventful Nationals!

Lost an alpine window during section 5. However I managed a 3rd in Class1 (89th overall)

Unfortunately On my trip home from our follow up camping in Staffs at Stutabs parents I started to get some very nasty grinding noises from the bell housing which I surmise is the bearing in the Clutch Release machanism failing.

So today i started taking the floor out along with the seatbox to hopefuly have he gearbox out tomorrow.

From this you na see the probable cause, there is no clutch hole sealing grommet in the N/S of the S1 bell housing which has allowed all sorts of crap into the bellhousing.

Really looking forward to seeing what crud is in there NOT

I had the same issue on my 86" after competing at a P&D do, all I had to do was remove the box and clutch, give it all a good was out and refit all the same parts back plus a new grommet. It did loads of trials and comps after with no clutch probs.
 
Hmm Andy thinks it could be the main box output shaft bearing.

The bearing vibration only occurred in 4th while cruising. Apparently the bearing can become loose and spin in the case when the box is hot.

I had drained and refilled both boxes prior to setting out.

Well box is coming out tomorrow and I will pop a new clutch plate in at the same time.

Might pop an s2 box in that I have been offered then I can rebuild the s1 box at my leisure. The bugger is of course I will have to swap the bellhop sings and release units
 
The bellhousing is an easy swop and if the bearing housing is spinning, I used to center dot the outside of the housing and then locktite them in. if you want to upgrade your box go for a 2a with the bigger layshaft bearings if you can find a 2a six pot bellhousing.
 
I feel a sense of deja vu. My first Landy was a s2 109 6 cylinder with a Perkins 4.203. I got used to swapping the bell housing s around when I changed boxes. When I got a v8 conversion that too had the 6 cyl stud pattern.
 
If I recall correctly when I ditched a fecked s3 box for a 2a box I just needed to swap the layshaft bearing but otherwise I idea the 6 cyl housing on all 3 boxes I had in it

The layshaft bearings on pre 2A boxes are smaller and so is the layshaft spigot the bearing goes on.

After a good old GUNKing and a powerwash I then had to turn the 80" round 90 degrees in the garden so I could get the engine hoist in through the passenger door. This was acheived by highlift jacking then toppling the front round enough so I could get out the good old Tirfor Tu-16

Finally released fro the confines of SFF. Yes they were for some strange reason 5/8" nuts on the rear prop. I had to take an angle grinder to a cranked ring spanner to get it onto the nuts

Grrr, hots that for a previous owners botch of the clutch relase collar, blooming welded on !

Well I did pop the PTO cap off and try to wiggle the output shaft but that seems solid. There is a lot of play in the release bearing so that will be the first rebuild along with replaceing the clutch plate.

Tomorrow at crack of sparrow fart I am off to Ipswitch with some friends and a 6 wheel trailer on my 110 to pick up a Discovery that one of them bought on Weds, so not sure how much time I will get on the gearbox tomorrow.
