Hi, just bought mesel an 06 Freelander, got it home, took the spare key out of the wrapper, obviously never used, it turns the ignition lights on, but won't start the engine. Is this an easy fix, a main dealer fix, and if so how much? Thanks.

Hi, I used the fob to open the vehicle, still doesn't work. Tried locking the vehicle with the key, the opening it, still won't start the engine. Just wondering if the key needs re-programming

There is a transponder in the key that is read by the ecu. It's possible it has never been coded, maybe the previous owner replaced a lost key but didn't have it coded by the dealer? If you bought the car from a garage get them to sort it out.

you could check this. hold the working key by the ignition, and use the non-working key to start the vehicle. if this works, chances are there is no live transponder in the non-working key as it would cause interference and possibly prevent starting.

Just tried that, thanks Optimus, but no joy. Went to local Landy garage, he reckoned the transponder is goosed and is trying to get me another one.
