Hi Guys and Gals.
Yes, it's me, the one who said a few weeks ago that I have not had a problem in the last 5 months (knew it would bite me in the arse) !!!!!
1999 P38 4.6 HSE (Thor engine) located near Taunton, Somerset.
Disconnected the battery today for a couple of hours and when reconnected can't get keys to sync. Tried the normal, key in ignition, turn to position 2 for 20 seconds then turn off. Nothing. Tried no end of times with the same result.
Tried key in door, locking, unlocking with remote buttons pressed. nothing.
Tried disconnecting and reconnecting battery a few times, nothing.
When I try to start engine Message on dash says "Engine immobilised press remote" engine does not turn over. Press unlock button, yes you guessed it, nothing.
Central locking works ok when using key in door but I noticed that if locked with the key the alarm indicator on top of dash does not flash at all.
Tried EKA code input but still the same.
Could this be the infamous loss of sync between BeCM and ECU I have read about ?
If so, what indication should I see on the dash ?
Given up for tonight and have left battery disconnected, will see what happens tomorrow !!!!
Really annoying as everything was working as it should before disconnecting the Battery.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Definetly not the BeCAM / ECU sync thing. When you have that problem the engine will crank but just not start. Plus there is nothing displayed on the message centre.
On the Thor the key should sync when it is put in the ignition barrel unless of course the battery in the key fob is shot.

Thanks for your reply and confirming it isn't the BeCM thingy (Relief).
Fitted new batteries in both remotes not long ago, and was all working fine this morning before disconnecting battery.....Cheers.

With the help of moss smith the old girl is running again, many thanks to Mr Smith.
Key 2 refuses to sync at the moment but will keep trying. Perhaps it doesn't like days with a Y in them !!!!!!!

Not entirely accurate....

Depends on the Engine type...

I can't remember which way round it is, but with either the GEMS or THOR, one will turn over and not fire, the other just won't turn over at all....just not sure which combination it is....

Roger 47.
If you PM moss smith he will give you his number and talk you through the process.
I have disconnected my battery before and the key has synced ok simply by putting it in the ignition barrel, but not this time for some reason. I am still unable to sync my second key using any method !!!!
Will keep trying :))
Hope you have better luck than me mate.

try this!!Procedure for Programming a New or Non-Functional Remote:
New remote handsets even if ordered from the factory apparently have to be programmed/synchronized to the BECM by a special procedure formerly known only to dealers. Peter Marsh went through this dilemma when he purchased an official new remote for $147 from Land Rover (UK) and had to give them his VIN and Grandmother's maiden name. He got it to work by the following procedure: "Close the car. Insert the new remote in the drivers side lock pressing and holding the button with the lock symbol. Turn the key to the right as if locking, still holding the lock button down. Hold in this position for 3 seconds. Turn back to the centre position and pull the key out - STILL HOLDING THE KEY BUTTON. Once the key is out release the lock button. Whalla. Mine worked a treat after this." Wayne Gardam used the procedure from this section to get an old remote going again. When he purchased his Range Rover, one of its remotes would not work even after replacing the batteries, cover and keypad. The usual synchronization procedure had no effect. Search of net and owner's forums turned up a variety of suggestions from buying a new unit and getting the dealer to do it to turning in door for 10 seconds or placing in ignition etc. Finally, the procedure above worked first time! When Dan Foley got a new remote handset through the dealer, they wanted an extra $60 to program it, but he tried the above procedure himself and it worked perfectly.

I've got one of both so very familiar with the differences. The OP said his was a Thor so the check engine light will still show and the engine will crank. On the GEMs the check engine will not light up and the engine won't crank.

Thanks defender Td1 will try that tomorrow.
When I first bought the car the one remote did not work. I replaced batteries, button cover, and battery cover but it would not sync. Someone advised putting key in and turning to position 2 for 20 seconds then turn off and it worked. Both remotes have operated ok until I had the battery off yesterday. One remote has synced but the other will not even though I used the same procedure.
You gotta love LR !!!

Did the new fob immediately remotely unlock your RR without being put into the ignition switch first?
