Key in ignition warning after key taken out.

Hi folks. My 2000 p38 has started to indicate a ‘ key in ignition ‘ after the key is taken out and I open the door. It doesn’t lock with the remote which I understand as the car thinks the key is still in the ignition, luckily it does lock manually. Any ideas ?

Spray a bit of oil in the ignition barrel whilst pushing the middle. Simpelz.

The micro switch that operates and gives the indication the keys in the ignition switch is stuck in the make position therefore not releasing. Maybe.

Blast a load of electrical contact cleaner down there. Then squirt in some graphite powder. You can get 4 mini cans for about a fiver. You'll want to do all your locks afterwards and your seatbelt holder!

I squirted some contact cleaner and then used an air line to force the crud out. A few goes and the problem appears resolved....for now.

Perfect! A bit of graphite lube now and it'll stay away for a few years.

Graphite powder is what I used , DO NOT FILL THE LOCK WITH IT , it's quite difficult getting it out so you can get the key in .!!
Other that that no problem since .

That is exactly how you clean the barrel and micro switch lever out. A small amount of graphite powder completes the job.

......I'm following the advice and adding a small amount of graphite powder....... had been wary as I thought it might "gunk" up.....

The stuff in the little aerosols should be fine. great stuff.
