hi i have a landrover discovery 2 1999, bought the car with only 1 key , called up a local dealer he said about £150 quid for a replacement key and fob , i have been looking on ebay are there is some blank keys on there plus the same fobs just wondering can i buy these get it cut and them take it to a main dealer to get it reprogrammed it would save a lot of cash thanks any help would be much app ,, george

I got a 2nd fob and a blank key from the bay of evil I took it to an independant LR garage to re-programme the fob though - much cheaper than a main stealer.

Yes you can LR main dealer or any independant with the 'testbook' or similar kit but before you buy make sure there is either an ID bar code sticker outside or there's the number code inside without either of these ID's the fob is useless.
Key blanks can be cut/copied by shoe repairers in my area.

I could do with a spare for my disco... and my local keycutter/shoe repairer has LR key blanks there. would they just make a copy there and then and it would work... or is there some electronics in the key itself.

Some shops have a patterns based on the key number that you give them to copy the key profile but that's similar to the placing the original key and blank side by side and copying that way but then u have a fob to program.

The "electronics" are in the keys black plastic handle/fob for a D2, D1 has a seperate fob so no probs with a blank from who ever you buy it from, shoe repairer is best 'one stop shopping.

From what i remember when we looked at coding new D2 Keys with our equipment back in the later part of the 90's, there is a bit of a catch with them. When they are new, they come with a code attached on a piece of paper. The code is however repeated ie A12345A12345 (where A12345 is repeated) I recall sending a techie into the bin to get mine when i took delivery of our new D2

When used, the second part of the code begins to increment with every use, ie A12345A12345 becomes A12345A12346 and so on. After about 256 uses, Ie A1234512601 you cannot then add a key to a vehicle using its original A12345A12345 code, but must know its current number which includes its increment, in order to add it to another vehicle or the same vehicle if the body control ECU is being replaced.

For that reason we provide the current code information of any / all coded fobs with our equipment and assume that the Nanocom, which is ultimatly based on our equipments capabilities. does the same.

So if you are buying a new and unused fob, you should have no problems coding it in, just as long as you also have its code, but if it is used, you will need to know what its current code is, rather than that it had when new.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but does anyone know which seller on the bay has these replacement fobs that don't require any reprogramming? Just bought a 2000 D2 TD5 and the unlock microswitch is completely missing from my spare key...

The only fobs I can turn up in a search are either ones with no circuit board, or ones that need to be taken to a dealer to have programmed. Hence the question.

Dropped a bead of solder onto the dry joints where the button had fallen off, bridging the gap with a paperclip unlocks the car just fine, so I guess all I need is a donor button.. and replacement rubber.
