Hi,

I have had a problem with my key fob for a while now, every now and then it will lock the doors by itself even if the keys in my pocket. On top of this the drivers door lock doesn’t work, the key won’t go all the way in so I am reliant on the key fob.

If I can’t fix the door lock will I need to get a new one which will mean new keys and hence new ignition barrel?

It’s a 2000 Discovery TD5.

Hi, not so simple, that's why i have a golden rule: always have a second fob when you have a D2 especially if you dont have your own diagnostic tool, even worst for you that it seems that you can't even use the EKA code if your fob fails for good, if the vehicle is on factory settings repairing the key barrel will let you only introduce the EKA to remobilise it cos when you'll unlock withe the key and open the door it will immobilise.

if i was you i'll get a fob with the programmer from here https://remotekey.co.uk/land-rover/land-rover-discovery-ii-discovery-series-2-year-1999-to-2006/ at least you'll have the EKA code too if you dont have it yet then you are on the safe side, otherwise you can end up with the vehicle immobilised any time

As @sierrafery says, it's not that simple, or that hard either. The D2 has a known problem of the ignition barrel wearing which had to be replaced, so many of us might have two different keys, one for the door and the other for the ignition.

Provided you have a good fob, or better still two good fobs and a working central locking system then it's unlikely to cause any difficulties.

Your first job is to find out why the central locking is activating, it's my guess that you have an intermittent short circuit happening in the fob. So in the first instance I too would advise that you get a new fob, then get the suspect one off to somewhere where they can fix it for you.

Your next problem will be to get the door lock fixed. You can either replace the lock or get a mobile locksmith to have a look at it. It sounds like one of the little brass sliders has jammed or there's something stuck in the bottom.
