K Series Thermostat Mod

Is the dealer recommended thermostat mod (remotely mounted in bottom hose) worth doing?

As it goes, I think both my top and bottom hoses need replacing, so it's probably the best time to do this if I am going to.

Just don't want to shell out the thick end of £100 if it's not going to have some benefit.

Thoughts and opinions, please.

Definitely worth doing as it reduces thermal shock on the engine, the old system used to dump a load of relatively cool water into a hot coolant jacket when the thermostat opened. The differing temperatures and therefore different expansion/contraction of the ally in the engine/head causes problems.

Mind you, I just had a look at the location of the current thermostat housing - could they have made it less accessible!!!

True but you'll only have to do it once!
Have a look at your inlet manifold rubber gasket, if it's leaking (a lot of them do) then change it at the same time.... Having the manifold out of the way makes accessing the thermostat much easier.

Thanks for that - I did think that I may do the manifold gasket at the same time.

To be honest, I don't actually think it's leaking at the moment, but I guess it's one of those jobs that's worth doing when you've got the cooling system drained down.

I recall reading a LR Service Bulletin (online, I think) and it suggested that the manifold leak is usually caused by the fixings 'relaxing'. So I guess it's worth replacing the studs and nuts whilst I'm in there.

It goes on and on, doesn't it!!!

Fit an EWP while you are at it, and make sure it runs after engine shutdown.
