Is the head fitted to a 1.4,1.6 and 1.8 K Series engines all the same or is there some difference in valve size etc. Would a 1.4 for example fit straight on to a 1.8 block ?
K Series heads are they interchangable ?

The simple answer is yes 
however you need the later 96 on large port head.
I should also say that the casting is the same but cams won't necessarily be the same. The cams from the 1.6 115 bhp MG ZS will give the 1.8 engine around 130 bhp

i have not long fitted a 1.6 head from a rover 200 i think it was onto my mgf 1.8i same engine as the freelander but if i can find the thread there is a slight difference in the freelander and car head nothing to worry about but if i find it i will post a link
