I posted on the welcome board and now just doing a little research into obtaining a defender 90. Being new and knowing very little I need to read up on the boards a lot. But as a little browse on the web I stumbled upon this:

External link to autotrader example...

Now, is this a reasonable price for the '96 300Tdi? I'm just trying to get a feeling of what the ball park prices should be for age and other variables. I know prices can vary widely for Defenders so I need to shop around...but does this one look worthy of interest?

Seems like a reasonable price. But obviously you'll want to check it over including the service schedules, receipts for wok done etc.

Buy your self a Land Rover magazine like LandRover Owner International or Land Rover Monthly and check out the LandRovers for sale in there to compare prices etc.

I'd try and get a discount for Alloys and wind deflectors tho :D :D

Yeah I just picked up LOI just the other day and it has a handy buying guide supplement with it covering all the Land Rover models and what to look out for when buying one...

There you go then.

Sorted, get out there test drive lots of different ones not just 300 tdi's either try 200 tdi and TD5's.
A lot depends on wot you want your Landy to do and of course everyone has a different opinion but I would say for everyday running around a TD5 is hard to beat. If you want to go wading in V deep water then personally I'd go for a 200 tdi.

Each type of vehicle has its own peculiarity ( just like the owner  ) so the choice is kinda personal.:)

'twould be used as a run around and nothing to arduous. Maybe try a green laning or something as I've never done. Generally speaking though I'd be on the roads.

I'd recommend joining a local club.

a, They'll generally have a GLASS member (ooer missus)
b, They'll do various events that you can go along to with the benefit of experienced people there to help/take the p*** out of you when you get stuck etc.
c, They'll be totally nuts and you'll enjoy owning a LandRover and being a nut too.

if it helps. i paid that for my 96 epsom green county van but it had 85 on the clock. much the same spec as that one too.

i know this doesnt mean much as landy engines go on for a while if looked after. but i am sure you could find one with lower miles for the money... may take a while though.

seems very good price. i paid SEVEN grand  a year ago for my csw 90 with aboot 120000 on't clock. not as nice as that.

it wasnt sold private though (so always a bit added on!!) and came with 6month warranty.

was probably 500-grand too much.

hope that helps.
