Steering Box adjustment
This is what RAVE says for a 300tdi ... .

1. Apply park brake brake, chock wheels and Jack
up front of vehicle until wheels are clear of
ground.
2. Support chassis front on axle stands.
3. Disconnect drag link from steering drop arm.
4. Check torque to turn See Fault diagnosis,
Stiff Steering Checklist.
5. Centralise steering box See Centralise
Steering Box.
NOTE: Only check for no backlash when
steering box is in central position.
NOTE: If steering wheel is not straight, it
should be repositioned See Repair,
Steering Wheel.
6. Adjustment is obtained by rocking the drop arm
about centre whilst an assistant slowly tightens
the steering box adjuster screw.
7. Tighten locknut when all backlash has been
removed.
8. Repeat the check for backlash. If backlash exists
loosen locknut and repeat adjustment
procedure.
9. Turn steering wheel lock to lock and check no
tightness exists.
10. Ensure front wheels are aligned and in straight
ahead position.
11. Adjust drag link 924 mm between ball joint
centres.
12. Connect drag link and tighten to 40 Nm (30
lbf/ft).
13. Lower vehicle to ground level and remove
chocks.
14. Road test vehicle

i was waitin for the comments about my box . no me old box didnt leak just had a slack spot in t middle like me new one . lol. old ones a bit rusty but dont leak . how do i stop my front wheels from hitting on full lock there must be a adjustment somewheer .ive got bigger wheels on. thanks again

The new box SHOULD have come ready to go, NO need to adjust - this is done in the factory.

You will probably find that you have a dodgey drop arm ball joint or drag link ball joint, or if your drop arm was reused the splines might be very worn, did you torque it right up - like BIG STYLE?

For the rubbing tyres, your lock stops need adjusting; look at the swivel housing, you will see a bolt that sticks out and corresonds to a flat on the axle, undo the lock nut and wind this out a wee bit until it doesn't rub.

Another thing to look at, is there play in the UJ that turns the box. I wish you were closer, I'd have the old box off you. My "NEW" ebay one is leaking already, now I'm resealing my old one.. Did you see me pics?

sorted just really tightend that big nut holding the drop arm on and it must pull all the gears together , steering was to tight then, thank fu** for that big washer you bend over it to keep it on . so all my steering slack has been that nut even with the old box that i got the local indi to do 6 months ago , maybe they need pulling up again after you driven them abit, im a happy chapy now , with a rusty spare box and a disco drop(came with new one), i did the drop arm ball joint thing 3 months ago and half way through doing my poly bushes all cause of that fing nut not done up by local garage, any way nice and tight now, thanks for all help
