Hi All,

Can anyone give me an idea as to the symptoms of the onset of steering box failure?

I have a fair bit of play at the steering wheel at idle, the steering is pretty vague, worse than my old 300, she pulls left all the time, worse under braking. I adjusted the steering box at the top, and although it took out the play, i lost 'self centering'

I have replaced, the front springs, (Sticky)brake calipers and hoses, radius arm to body mounts, had the tracking done twice, changed a track rod end, and searched, prised and poked about for wear to no avail

Over bumps, she shakes the wheel a wee bit, so the steering damper might be on the way out, its a D2 on a 'Y' with 130k on the clock

Also, as regards a box, new, second hand or recon?

Thanks

Gordon

box may be worn out but youve over adjusted if self centrering has been lost ,it must be only adjusted when box is exactly central ,theres a slot for a drill bit/pin at the back of drop arm ,you then rock input shaft till freeplay is just eliminated ,while box is central check steering wheel is and adjust if not ,road wheels can then be adjusted by drag link after a road test

THanks James,

I had backed off the screw right away when the self centering was over tight,

I'll try it with the pin setup when it and see how that goes

Thanks
