i have just bought a 53 plate freelander. its got a leak on the rocker cover gasket, i think!? i have had a look and it seems to be leaking from the side closest the bulk head, and dripping onto the gearbox, i think its also dropping onto the exhaust mannifold but i cant see that to confirm it. its got quite a bit of oil sitting ontop of the rocker cover top aswell underneath the plastic engine covers.

question is, how hard is it to do the rocker cover gasket? and what is involved in replacing it?

cheers, mick.

Hi Mick

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like a DIY job.

Had one done and it cost me 1267€. However, it had a HG done, exhaust manifold gaskets, new screws, etc.

The part itself costed 326,67€.

You can see an exploded view here

Cheers

Well I had a look at the oil leak today, I found 1 rocker cover bolt completley undone, and 4 loose ones, I tightened all them up and cleaned the breather ontop of the rocker cover. I have taken a few pics on my fone of the oil leaks, so when I get chance I will stic them up on here and see if anyone can shed some light on it. I will let you's know how I get on and if it cures it or not.

Cheers, Mick.

From your link, it looks like the rocker cover gasket is item 2 and its 23 euros. I have not fitted one though so cannot comment on how easy or difficult it is.

well, it looks like i have sorted it. there were loose bolts at the back of the rocker cover, nearest the bulk head, i nipped them up and cleaned the engine breather. all is well at the minute!
