Just bought a military defender 90 300tdi

Hello everyone! Just logged back in after a few years. This time I've bid and won a 1998 defender 90 military spec soft top. The Landy is still not out of the army disposal. Should be with my by Sunday next. I'm very excited as ive always wanted a 300tdi 90. I'm told these are special vehicles with heavy duty specs and 24v electronics. Don't know if that's good or bad yet. Downside is buying 2 batteries instead of one! It's got a convertible roof system. The canvas is missing. Many missing bits in and around the car but mostly cosmetic. I've already got myself a set of NAS spec wipac lights set and ordered a soft top for it. The engine looked beautiful and well maintained. I just hope it starts up fine. Just need advice from you guys on how to go about starting it up. Assuming its been sitting for perhaps a year now. And what all to check and look for apart from the usual oils and filters.
Appreciate any helps comments and suggestions. Will update thread with pics as they come.

Any suggestions as to how to start her up?!

jump start off a lorry (24 volt ), i would wind it over a bit first with fuel valve disconected to get some oil round it

i thought the 24volts was just for the radio.

better check before yu blow yo electrics.

Is is dual volt? Can I run it independently on 12v? Need to know what the lights self starter and blow plugs are 12 or 24....?

As i recall she should be jumped from 12 v but dont take this as gospel it has been a very long time scince i have worked with one they are fantastic vehicles and i never came across any with bad electrics as suggested turn her over with fuel d/c to lubricate engine before firing her up she should start up no problem for you these things are built to last and are generaly very well maintained whilst in service i cant wait for the pics i hope you have lots of fun with her. How much does she have on the clock?

Going to get it tomorrow. A universal joint has come off from the steering column. Apparently the reason this car was removed from service. I'm guessing worst case scenario I may need a new steering box. So no steering now. Fixing it tomorrow. Taking my other defenders box just in case. Post pics tomorrow onwards. No cam or phone allowed inside the premises. Very exciting. Mileage is 87000km. That's less than 60k miles

all army landrovers are 24v (im a army mechanic) nothing in them is 12v (appart from the batts) if u want to slave them of a 12v system connect the jump leads to ONE battery and it will turn.. but will be weak failing that.. give it the good old bump start (2nd gear is usually the best) any questions feel free to pm me

Is that a new thing james, as I have owned a few ex army landies that have been 12v. They were seris landies though.

I need to change my wiper and indicator stalks and some more switches. Where do I find these in 24v? Or are they not volt specific?

You sure you haven't just been working on Radio Landys, As ive looked at several MOD landys and alot of the NON Radio ones only had one battery and where 12V and even some of the radio ones had 12V vehicle systems and 24v military systems.

when i was an army engineer the lightweights and radio (FFR) landies were the 24v the rest were 12 but this was 14 years ago things may have changed

The Land Rover 90/ 110 wolf is a 24v system, starter, alternator, bulbs the lot. The older 90/ 110 Defenders were 12v with a 24v radio system.

everything military vehicle wise is 24v thesedays (defenders / BV's / pinz / SV's / trailers)

the wolf batterys are 12v tho so the double battery setup fits str8 into a civvi wagon -even the civvy battery compartment is pre drilled for the military battery tray!

gr8 alternative to the optima setup + much cheaper!
