I must be mad but....

Deciding on Monday that I am going to stop messing and do a full nut and bolt resto on my Landy...

I decided I needed to get a runabout for now

Hey presto...found myself a disco 200tdi for £600. Wasn't looking for a Land Rover at but it just popped up and we really don't get these coming up locally unless they are being broken for parts. As its 200tdi like my Defenders I decided to see what these things are like. Full Mot, 232000 miles!!! But runs well enough. However has a few problems as you would expect for the money!!!

Hilarious though...its BARELY more refined feeling than my Defender...very comfy though.

Firstly...can you guys tell me what stuff is shared between 200 and 300tdi discos. Is it everything except engine, gearbox and props or is there more??? See I think the heater motor is seized??? when I try to put blower on, revs drop until switch off then revs go up...no action from blower. So just wondering if 300tdi ones are the same as quite a few available.

Black smoke...only slight puff on start up...starts on the button...doesn't even need heated...the pumps been tweaked and it does go well from about 1000rpm. What I do notice is if you pull away in a highish gear it will throw out black smoke continuously, once revs are up theres not a bit of smoke. And when labouring up hills or taking off with a trailer on, it puffs a mighty whack of smoke. But only continuous if you are pulling away in a higher gear where it takes a bit to get up to speed. Its just enough to leave me feeling a little embarrassed when in heavy traffic and would like to know how the heck I can maybe just ease back the smokiness a tad...its def black smoke.

Also...this is just supposed to be a runabout and it does have scars. But are these old Discos worth spending money on???

Think 200 & 300 heaters are completely diferent :( the motor on my '91 is fubar so I'm looking into replacements but without spending huge money

Think you'll find subtle differences between most 200 / 300 parts, interior is obviously diferent as is the engine & gearbox (transfer box same as are axles, well mostly :p )

to highlight oddities & diferences, a mate of mine has a 1996 '300 and needed an engine radiator, I gave him a spare rad for a '200 and Iirc he needed to make a top hose as it was on wrong side & possibly had to swap the oil cooler pipe adaptor nipples

As to you're smoke,

Might help:) although egt & boost guages would also help ;)

Summint like that anyway
