......would have to put my annual membership fee up from its current £75 to possibly £150 just to stay afloat if this happens i for one would be withdrawing my membership forthwith as i simply cannot afford it

If you rejoin the National Trust every year it works out a lot cheaper (about £36) than letting them help themselves from your bank account, my son and myself have been doing this for years :). If we could afford £75 then we would pay it, so its better they get our £36 than nothing at all.

Nigel.

Didn't they fence off Kinder Scout to prevent overgrazing by sheep? I think they've maintained access for walkers.

Bugger, i missed this! My fred is still top of the list if you google her and land rovers but i agree, that is a bit of a blow to my ploy to woo her!

It is quite easy to counter argue this. I suggest contacting them. The fact of the matter is that without traffic, the lanes will become overgrown and over time they will be inaccessible. I know of many lanes near me where that's exactly the case. Some are not even accessible for ramblers, especially during the spring/summer!

I don't get why ramblers won't see it like that.

EDIT:

I just posted a thread on a ramblers forum entitled "I'm a 4x4 driver". Feel free to read my thread:
I'm a 4x4 driver | Live for the Outdoors

Will be interesting to see what they say.

Bloody hell... well done!

I tried to join the RA for the same reason on two different occasions and they wouldn't even acknowledge me let alone allow me to post in their forum!

Yeah, but you don't drive green lanes, you become a permanent fixture.:D

well mr David Harris of Kent feels quite strongly:

"Not all off road drivers are as considerate as you claim to be, many use bridleways etc in woodland as race tracks. I agree with everything diolch says. 4x4's ruin green lanes, deep ruts that fill with rain water and never dry out, and are a danger to the walker and horse rider. Legel or not, i would like to see all 4x4's, except farm vehicles, banned from all green lanes from the start of September to the end of May. Just to preserve the surface."

what would be more damaging to a green lane I wonder ? my freelander on road tyres, or a huge tractor with mud tyres ? can't see the wood for the muddy ruts.

Urge to kill rising

I see from the letter that Ms Bradbury didn't actually write it. She is listed as the president at the bottom, so I'm presuming one of two things, either it's standard headed paper with her name on all of em' or she agrees with it, or both of course.

Either way, folk who are writing to complain may well wish to point out that in last summer's BBC program entitled "Secret Britain", she and her presenting partner, Matt Baker, were using a 110 Defender to get to several "Secret Britain" locations, which involved driving along tracks and edges of fields.

If she, and the group that she is president of thinks that strongly about it, why didn't she walk??? Flippin' hypocrite!

Chris.
