I've no idea what you're reffering to with the 'black thing'. Whether it's the pipe going to the airbox from the throttle body or something else, i can't remember what mine had written on them as i just scrapped the lot and opted for a K&N conical intake bolted right onto the throttle body.
I'm guessing your on about the airpipe though. If it is the pipe, get that thing replaced as whoever's done it before has probably made a right mess inside of it with silicone sealant or whatever they've used. Check your filter as well, if it's black replace it as the standard airbox is bloody restrictive anyway without needing a replacement filter.
If it's performance you're after, you want more air into the engine, not less! But a leak on the pipe is just gonna be a restriction to the airways.
