Can anyone help? Firstly the proble... Just bought myself a '98 Freelander 1.8 Xei, been driving it for about a week when I noticed throttle response had become poor with power delivery feeling intermitent, this was at about 70mph. When I slowed down and was driving in 1st 2nd and 3rd the juddery intermitent power delivery was exentuated. Really struggles to get going up a hill.
Looked under the bonnet, found a black plactic canister near the jack, it has air purge valve written on it. Noticed that one of the pipes had sealan all over it where it had obviously been repaired before, so I tried to re-seal, still no improvement. The pipe in question runs from the head of the canister and joins the injection strip near the throttle mechanism. Can any one tell me what the black canister is for starters? have i got unwanted air in my fuel system, how do i get it out etc?! Appreciate any help.

no idea :(
sequential HGF is common on the 1.8 and KV6 - so much so that some garages are refusing to repair HGF - only offering replacement engines - coz they dont want to be saddled with a warranty :(.
even the latest MLS gaskets have been known to fail.
Did they replace the rail?
did the fit the remote thermostat?
has it got good antifreeze in it?
what sort of driving do you do - stop/start is meant to exaccerbate the problem ?

Cheers, head gasket changed once... is it likely to go again? done 72k no was changed at 43k!

it'll be fine - once the HG has been done it'll never go again - and having purchased such a reliable vehicle you will have years of trouble free motoring to look forward to

The issue int the Hg he wants to know wot the black thing is.I dunno, never worked on a hippo.:whoosh:

now, now Sean - I agree with your sentiments, but we dont know fur sure - he might have got a good one?

oooo - did yu just see Porky wizzing overhead? ;)

Chocolate teapot - nar - yu can eat them.

cos you lot have put the fear of god/HGF into him and distracted him from the origainal question which was woss this bit?We all know HGF is gonna be on the cards again cos it seems even MG/chinense new owners dont trust it seeing as the new k series has got a metal gasket

Seriously - there are good ones about - crikey - some peeps on here even take them orf road!.
but - and its a big BUT - the majority of peeps that have owned em, as well as the died in the wool tratta boys, wouldnt touch a petrol Hippoo if yu paid em. There are lots of potential probs - the vast majority of which can be expensive. Its yo money.........

we wuzz merely responding to his HGF Q - as fur the black thing, I dont know - but NI, Darmain, Minge - or even Dopey will be along soon to defend their honour :D.

i did realise this before buying... somehow convinced myself I could find a good one! Should have stuck with the Impreza WRX!! Drive it like a loon all day with no trouble...
