I am kind of tempted to get this head unit https://www.joyingauto.eu/joying-ne...n-head-unit-support-android-auto-carplay.html for my wife's Freelander 1.
It's a 2005 with a rubbish non original head unit.
I notice that double din cage units are available for the face lift Freelander.
I did take the facia off a couple of weeks ago to fit a heated front screen switch, and one thing that concerns me is that the heater controls under the head unit sort of slope up, and so the height for double din doesn't look like it goes all the way back.
It's very cold to go outside to take it to bits just to measure it up.
Does anyone know if a unit this big will fit?

There is a picture of the unit at the link that I posted and it shows that the unit protrudes 109mm into the cage and it uses the entire 100mm of height all the way back of that 109mm.

Hi, I had no problem fitting my Kenwood double DIN h/u

You will need to adapt the wiring somewhat, although there are FL1 to DIN adapters available. Joying are amongst the better Chinese stereos, but if you listen to FM, make sure the existing antenna amplifier still gets 12V power. I have one of their earlier Intel head units in my P38, although I had to install the single din under passenger seat with 1m ribbon to the screen in the dash !!

Don't bother with the supplied Sat Nav app. Just install Waze instead.

Sorry to do a bit of a hijack on this thread but I want to fit a new h/u to my D2 (single din with screen) but looking at the Joying website none of the h/u's mention anything about DAB or am I missing something ?

You need an external DAB+ receiver dongle. Don't bother with the default DAB App because they are crap. Checkout this thread and use DAB-Z instead. Yes the thread is 174 pages, but mainly check for dongle compatibility. Do NOT buy an SDR dongle. If in doubt, join that forum, and post a question about which dongle to buy.

Also consider installing an external DAB antenna. The window stick-on versions are useless, especially on tinted windows.

Thanks for that I'll have a read. The stick on DAB antenna I used on my FL works well even with the opticool glass & heated screen. I did try a mag mount on the roof but found it slightly worse so reverted to my stick on. The D2 also has a heated screen but I was thinking of trying a powered antenna like you get with the Pure highway which works well in the wifes Mitsubishi, although it doesn't have a heated screen. Have you any experience of the powered type ?

No haven't tried power antennas. I did buy one of the "through glass" external telescopic types, but the tint on my P38 seemed to block the RF.

At moment I have a DIY coax antenna in rear window, but planning to mount an external of some sort on the top of the tailgate.

Does the Freelander 1 really have an antenna amplifier? I'm surprised because the factory roof antenna is quite long.
I had a B4 Passat years ago that needed a power adapter thing for an aftermarket headunit, but the antenna on that was a little "bees sting" antenna.

Update on this thread from last year. Just installed one of the newer Joying 8-Core 2DIN stereos in my wife's FL1. Blazing fast & built-in 4G works well with a cheap data SIM, and has dual diversity 4G antennas. WAZE GPS is quick & accurate, so GPS antenna is good. Even google voice search works, and allows sat-nav destinations to be set with no typing !

Downside is the Chinese FM radios are crap, so added a USB DAB dongle. Replaced the FL1 roof antenna with one of these Eightwood things, which interestingly also sorted the FM reception. Amazon product
