I've done it!

After all my concerns about trying it I've finally managed to change my water pump! Not a big job to most of you I know but its the first thing I've ever done myself so I'm very pleased! I let it run for a while until the heaters started blowing warm air and then turned it off and let it cool down.. Checked the water and it needed topping up a little bit but I can't see it leaking anywhere so took it for a drive. Feels great to finally be able to drive it without worrying about the water p*ssing out the bottom!


Only thing I did notice though was that when I put my foot down there is a kind of whiring squeeling sound - not like a fan belt slipping although I guess it could be that.. Perhaps turbo? I think I'll let a garage diagnose that noise for me! For now though I'm just pleased that its holding water!!

Your squealing sound might be the "serpentine belt" on the tensioner pulley. A 1p piece is all it will cost to fix. Lots of posts about this on this brilliant forum.

Thanks David, I think it is something else though as it only happens when in gear and driving along. If I dip the clutch and rev or rev up on the drive it doesn't make the sound...

My serpentine belt squeals when the engine is cold and does it more when the engine is underload.
Did yours make the noise before you did the pump? If it has just appeared then it is likely to be the belt/tensioner. If it does it at all when the engine is ideling try a big squirt of WD40 on the belt and tensioner. If the noise goes then you know that's what it was.

Still bet the penny trick works better.

check you intercooler pipe is tight and fitted correcty, guessing you removed it to do the water pump

I'm sure it will if the tensioner is the problem...I was just suggesting a quick easy way to check if that is the problem....but I also like Mark-D's suggestion to check the intercooler pipe

leave it a few days an see if it settles down, mine did

Hi guys, thanks for all the messages of advice. I'm affraid I've had a change of heart about the Land Rover.. I drove it to work on Monday and when I got home parked it on the the drive where it has stayed since (back to using the wifes car).

The noise is more a whistling than a squeel and I think its the turbo as it only does it at certain revs when driving. That with the other problems I've decided to cut my losses and get rid of it. If I knew what I was doing and had a bit more money to throw at it I might have kept it but I can't. It would be nice if I could get my money back for it but I'm not holding my breath, its got the following wrong with it (that I know of).

The new whistling noise.
The vibrating over 60mph.
Speedo works when it wants to.
Rev counter works when it wants to.
erm, what else have I mentioned before? Think thats it..

New Water pump is fitted, 11 months MOT, tax til end of Jan 2010, got a new air filter, oil filter, and fuel filter not yet fited, just put £25 in deisel in it..

A shame really as its so straight and solid, very little rust to be seen anywhere. Once I get the log book in the post it will be going on ebay or a similar site unless anyone here is interested in taking it on. If so feel free to PM me.
