Can anybody help me with this damn noise please?

I have a freelander td4 2000 x reg.

only got 81k on the clock.

Every time I start the engine from cold and begin to drive I can hear an annoying clicky screechy noise. The pitch is higher for a split second as I dip the clutch to change gear.

I does not happen in reverse although this might be down to RPM.

I have changed the Aux belt and air con belt to no avail.

The noise to me sounds like it is coming from the left hand hand the engine as I am driving.

The noise is not there when stationery but can be heard if I rev the engine.

It wears off as the engine warms up.

Any ideas please as I took it to the dealers earlier this week to be told it might be the turbo?

Thing is I left the car with them overnight so that they could test drive it when cold to diagnose, the muppets sat in the car with the engine idling and called me to say that it was not doing it. I told him I would come back and go out in the car with a techy. The car was already warm for it to be a faint noise so it wasnt at its loudest.

Regards
Paul.

In this case the dealer might be right. Without hearing it it's hard to say but it could be the turbine rotor thats rubbing, probably why you don't hear it at low revs, there won't be enough exhaust flow to overcome the friction. It would go away when hot because the turbine casing would expand with the heat & increase the clearance between the rotor tip & casing, we are talking about clearances in the order of thousandth's of an inch. I hope I am wrong but the symptoms fit.

Thanks for the reply.

If it really is the turbo how much will it cost to put right? Is there anything I could I do to it myself or is it specialist only?

After reading your post and thinking about it, it does make sense. :(

I got the car 4 - 5 weeks ago so I would hope it would be covered under the warranty?

Its been evident since I got it. I will have to have a word!

I noticed this morning when driving home from work that when I rest my hand on the gear stick whilst driving I can feel the clicky noise travel through the stick.

If I am in 3rd or 4th and push the gear stick to the left or right whilst in gear the clicky noise is louder. (more so if I push it over to the right in 3rd). If this makes sense?

Could it be the gear box or clutch?
