It's all gone wrong

I thought they were only single vanos but I did get told there was a run of non vanos m62's, some of which found their way into a few range rovers.
As for an S62 in a range rover? Doable but you'd need a full M5 wiring loom which would probably go in no probs. Now that's a proper range rover lol
 
Got the car back today (2 weeks later!!!!!)
Anyway, here's what it had under warranty.
Front lower control arm, timing chain tensioner, PCV valve. Wheel bearing was inspected but no fault found, noted it would soon be due front discs and pads and maybe thats what the groaning noise is.

Now then, having now had both lower control arms the tracking has gone out of alignment, steering wheel is cock eyed, car won't go in a straight line, seems like I'm always correcting left or right, I would have expected the tracking to have been done but the track rod ends are seized on the steering arm and if I wanted it sorted I wouldn't get the car back for another week so I told them to bring the car back.
The PCV valve was ok, the diaphragm wasn't split although the vacuum and breather pipes were in poor condition and so it has a new PCV and pipes....result = still smokes like an old steam train when it kicks down and at high revs so that's not fixed!
Timing chain tensioner, engine has a start up knock from cold and also hot starting after being parked for about 1/2 hour, still the same, went to asda earlier, came back out and it knocked on start up and the oil light was lit while it was knocking. When the oil pressure was up, oil light went out and the engine went quiet. ...not a tensioner I think but will it do it when a relevant mechanic is present? No!
So I had to pay for the alternator, £144 plus £100 fitting. While it was in bits the water pump was checked and found to have a bit of play in the bearing so it had a new water pump, £120 supplied and fitted.
All in its had various jobs done and only one seems to have sorted a problem and that's the alternator, I've got it back and it drives terrible, has a groaning noise on the front and smokes like a bastard when I kick it's head in.
If I'm being honest I could fix it all myself and it would get done a lot quicker than 2 weeks but I don't gave the time due to being at work long hours and to be honest, an L322 isn't what I expected, very nice to look at, the interior looks amazing but it doesn't drive as nice as I thought they should and the ride is much harder than expected.
Should've gone with my gut and bought a late BMW diesel car but I love the look of the L322 and im not a quitter so I'll get it sorted one way or another although I can see further arguments coming with the dealers regarding the smokey, knocking (on startup) oil leaking engine.
This isn't the final update that's for sure.

Looks like the L322 is the Devil's twin 's work.
 
The issues you are experiancing are what is ruining the ride and enjoyment of the car.....so to tar all L322's with that brush is a tad harsh.....the ride is a tad harsher than the second generation Range Rovers, but it is still a nice car to drive.

I would suggest taking another one out for a drive and see if you notice a difference....

A smokey engine is a tired engine that hasn't been loved, the timing chain tensioner on the M62 is hydraulic and is fed oil at pressure from the pump....over time the seals in the tensioner wear out and when the enine is off, oil leaks out and tension is lost on the chain causing a knock or rattle at start up until oil pressure reaches and fills the tensioner back up again.

It sounds like you may have an unloved example on your hands.....but please don't dismiss the L322 based on one example of it....there are many out there that drive a dream and ride well.
 
Leaking oil could well be the cam covers or oil left over from your pcv pipework. it sounds like your bought the same car as i did, although you still have a way to go to catch me up.
With hindsight I would only have bought one with very reputable dealer / specialist history and now i know what to look for i know i could find a good one if there is such a thing.
When i had my tracking done after replacing all the front suspension parts, kwikfit had to heat up the track rod ends to free them but didn't take them a week.

Thats what the mechanic said so I'll see how it goes. Rocker covers/gaskets were replaced in 2012 as well as the RMS so sounds like its suffered with oil leaks before

I'd previously heard about how unloved L322s can be a money pit so I bought this with my eyes open, 115k on a 2003 car with full dealer history up to 2011 then indy specialist history to present. I thought I'd done everything I should, I didn't accept cars with any faults or gaps in history and only considered cars with nothing but perfect bodywork (the 2010 facelift swung me on this one but cost me an extra few grand over an original bodied car) but despite this, the horrors were lurking deep beneath and just waiting to bite me but like I said, I'm sure I'll get it sorted soon enough. I've just had a forced 2 weeks in my M5 and I love that car, its my youngest child so the Range Rover has an uphill struggle to get into my good books and being faulty isn't doing it any favours lol.
Thanks for the therapy guys, I've decided thats what these forums are about, its a collection of like minded therapists who have been there, done that and sometimes know how to say the right thing to calm everything down or be brutally honest and make you see that you're flogging a dead horse (my P38 lol).

This forum and wise words from the likes of Saint and all the other regulars on here have brought me back from the edge many times.

I have gone from 'right that's it i'm done, sell the barsteward', to 'well that don't sound so bad, i'll fix that' within a few replies to a new thread I had started.

I am sure i will be there again but fortunately I do actually like fixing the thing, once it is fixed.

They are like a huge puzzle waiting to be solved and the pleasure you get from owning one is the relief from finding a problem and fixing it.
The pleasure from driving it is just a bonus. :)
 
I'm currently sat in a cafe, drinking a coffee while the Range Rover is sat on ramps having the tracking done.
Might treat it to a bath when it's done.
After a good night's sleep I'm more philosophical about it today, tracking was my main gripe and it started silently this morning, not a knock or squeak to be heard.

Phoned em. £69 +vat per hour.
Might try the stealers at that rate.
Just another update, alternator gone again. Lasted 400 miles.
