A graunching noise appeared on the wifes Td4HSE while 100 miles from home at the start of a caravanning holiday:confused:. I very rarely drive the FL having my own cars but It is always me that drives when it comes to towing. From the drivers seat on the move the noise appeared on the overrun in first and reverse "bloody auto gearbox" I thought"how much for one of those?":(, nothing I could do about it so far from home and at the start of the holiday so Just thought "press on, if it fails I will just have to deal with it". The noise came and went, seemed dependent on speed and load, was not always there but was present enough times to worry me, going up the "Devils Elbow" in Scotland :eek:raised more than the usual amount of worry and beads of sweat.Parked up now in the Highlands I decided to keep an eye (or ear) on it and after a couple of days after visiting a local shop and getting in to the car the noise was there immediately on startup - in park, so not the gearbox then. I kept the engine running and popped the bonnet up to see if I could more closely narrow down where this noise was coming from,it seemed to be from the drivers side of the engine bay in the vicinity of the PAS pump. Still a concern but but a less expensive one.When I got in the car the Mrs said that she had heard the noise before and it seems to come " when I press this button" and pressed the aircon switch to off - the noise immediately disappeared --- "hurrah its just the aircon clutch pulley thingy then" :cool: In an even better mood now when we got back to the caravan site I decided to have a bit of a poke and prod down near the air con compressor to see if I could feel any play or anything to find that the side upright splash guard (behind the drivers side front road wheel) had become partially dislocated with the locating lug for the guard sitting inboard of the front member and not in its locating hole and it was the plastic guard that was rubbing on the AC clutch when it was operating - switched off the clutch moved away from the plastic but when on it rubbed against it causing the noise. I popped the little lug bag where it is supposed to live and now no more worrying noises:clap2:, at least for now.So if you get those noises from below that make you think you need a new gearbox, IRD, VCU etc just check, it might just be nowt:lol:

Had the same thing a while ago. After a day of offroading in Axel (the Netherlands) driving home on the motorway with aircon on. Speed above 100km/h, FL silent as a FL can be on m-way. After leaving m-way, a few stops, pulling away in first, second, third... terrible grinding noise that stops once above 60km/h. Take a look under the bonnet, only finding an almost split turbo hose (now replaced with dph silicon hoses)
Keeps on going for a few days, noise gets worse, also above 60 km/h.
I realise it's only there when AC is working, hoping it's not f*cked up.
Due to lack of time, I hadn't cleaned the car properly yet. Opening the bonnet again, looking with a flashlight for mud and dirt in the engine bay, I see the same piece of plastic OP mentioned bent inwards against AC clutch.
Never been so happy! Now I can spend the money on decent AT tyres and not on an AC unit or anything else...
Now only convince the wife :D
