Well the other day I need my winch. So i switched it on but when it came to using it it would not work.
so I do the normal check the solenoid the earth no joy nothing it's getting no power.
This is not good as I'm stuck and dreading the thought of winching it out with a hi,lift.
so I get my jump leads out and clamp the Positive from the battey directly to the solinoied low and behold it switches on.

Now the question where an I get a deasent battery isolator switch? As this is the third one that has got crap in it and killed it. Preferably water proof.

Yes it was a red key one so that explains that then. But considering its the one that was in the box with the winch it's a bit odd.

But thanks jai I will get the marine ones in future.

Not really. Even the cables on most winches are too small IMO.
And yeah, those red handle switches don't have the capacity. An 8,000lb winch is going to draw anywhere between 350-450 amps at full load, so I consider the 250a switches too small.
The more underrated the switch the more volt drop you're going to get as you go higher in amp draw.
FWIW I use a 2000 amp switch that's rated 300a continuous and about 10 minutes at 500amp.
Cost me about $40US.

Got mine from David Bowyer at Goodwinch, running a 9.5 Goldfish and 2 Numax with an X-Eng split charge, no problem.
