is the new LR engine a ford cost cutter

Anyone who thinks an engine used in the transit is second rate simply knows **** all. Tranny diesels have always been mega reliable why would the latest one be any different. Why would LR spend many millions developing a new engine of their own when they can use the technology already sorted by Ford. It just makes sense.

I agree that the tranny diesel engine is good strong and reliable BUT as a ford employee the s***e they put on the engine to make it work emissions wise is crap!
For example bmw 3 litre diesel with all its arty farty tree huggin emission controls develops 230bhp and 369lb/ft of torque which has to be said is more than respectable BUT take the same car to my mates at falkland performance and you get 49 bhp and 58 lb/ft more just by reflashing the ecu to override said emmisions rubbish which is a hell of a hike.

In short, get rid of bloody tree huggers andjust allow the engines there full potential!

about a year ago i was working as a tree surgeon and we and the van we used was a transit cab with a tipper back.

now it was perfectly reliable but not a lot of power, it was a 2.5na. would have to feather the clutch to pull off up a hill altho to be fair that was with a load of woodchips in the back and towing a 1 1/2 tonne chipper. went through about 3 clutches a year like this!

new transit engine is a lot more powerfull tho so that isnt really comparable!

tranny injuns used ter spit their injector pipes off fer a pastime.
dunno about the new ones though.

so is the new engine better than the TD5 and V8 is this the start of the end of the landrover as a top of its class functional vehical.

Ford is the parent company to Land Rover so it makes sense to source an engine from inside the group, also that engine and gearbox has covered millions of miles in Transit's all over the world so you know they're strong reliable units and if it can put up with the dreadfull, harsh driving of "white van man" it should last well in a land rover. The new engine has more torque than the TD5 which is great, got a feeling the new engine is belt driven as opposed to chain on TD5 which is not so great.
