Is the Discovery a 'Proper' Land Rover?

RR P38/L322 aint.

P38's not proper!?!?!

No only are they content leaking gallons of oil onto the road but coolant into the footwells and freon into the passenger seats as well. They even manage to leak air into air!

They're more proper than a proper land rover.

;):D

After owning a swb series 2 in my youth, which leaked rattled and drove through or over most things put in front of it! i can honestly say that my 200tdi disco is as effective as my old swb S2! Yes it leaks yes it rattles but it will keep goin! New discos and freelanders all plastic an no balls!! and way to many electricaly things to go wrong when it gets wet!! thats my opinoin anyway, im off ta pack the shoppin an hoover the floor

My TD5 is the perfect car for me. Its a van, a limo, a minibus, an off-roader and a toy for me at the weekend. It also matches me like for like.
Its big like me (6ft5)
Its slow like me.
It also drinks too much, again like me. haha

I have had to drive a focus for a week . My core plugs has sprung a leak. ( fixed this weekend) its been a nightmare driving such a small un-fun car. I want my D2 back.
Is the disco a proper land rover? I think so. It's what kept the company alive in the nineties?
Even though the D3 is all new and electric everything, I still want one....

Anything produced by Landrover is a proper Landrover and to deny it is either stupidity, snobbery or plain head in the sand mentality.

OK, a Freelander 1.6 wan't go as far offroad as a Defender or Disco, and an L322 probably just won't ever go off road for another few years ... watch the leccy frizz out then when it's a few years down the line, but so what?

Landrovers had to conmpete in a market where people don't want Defender off-road ability or comfort levels, but want car levels of comfort with the chance to drive up a farm track, well, cross a kerb in Sainsburys carpark, and all LR did was accomodate them.

Frankly a Landrover is a Landrover whether it's a defender, Disco, Freelander or anything else they make.

Having said that, I'll stick to my 300 Tdi Disco .. I can go as far offroad as anything else, and then motor on the motorway as fast as anything else in the same comfort as anything else, towing a ****-load more weight than most other vehicles .. and still mend it with baling wire and an 'ammer .. ;)

Long live Landrover, whichever flavour of Landrover you drive ... I might have a gripe, thobut, if they change name and say Ta ta to the green oval ... ;)

My old Series 11A passed it's test yesterday but Im not sure if it's a proper Landy:It drove to the test centre at 70mph without breaking down, a whole 8 miles, that must make it reliable. It doesn't leak* and it starts first time, can't help thinking that it is pretending to be a Landy. On the other hand it is as draughty as hell and everything rattles and it leans to one side so perhaps it is trying hard to be a proper Landy.

I can say that I have wanted a defender for many years, for it's timeless styling and absolute ruggedness. I finally my persauded wife to take a test drive of a quite new defender:D. It was a cold wet day! As I presummed my wife's question would follow pretty soon, she asked "why doesn't the de-mister work:confused:?" My reply was "it's a landrover they don't work. so needless to say, my wife had to say no to my desire to own a Defender. She test drove a dicovery 3 and one is now parked in our drive. She is delighted with it's looks, performance and quality comfortable (car like) interior. And loves the elevated driving possition. She never complains about having to take the lr3 back to the dealership regulary to correct faults that have often accured- because she loves it! I am happy, that she is happy!:) For me the lr3 does exactly what a landrover is meant to do.

Just wondered of you've taken it off road yet... if so, how was it?

Maybe as far as this one ..

Does it matter if a D3 does or doesn't get used off road? Does it matter that any Landrover might not ever get used off road?

It has hydraulic sussies, like the lowriders of Mexican/American fame ... feckin' useless for anything other than showing off!!

the disco 3 is **** dont like it not good for off road. my old man has one and mine will do a hell of a lot more on road and off

more on road??? what can any car do onroad more than any other..
can it do 70mph check
can it stop check
can it tow a caravan / horsebox / trailer full of junk check

what more can yours do??

and btw.. look at the oil patches under mine and you KNOW it's a proper landrover..

A Disco 1 or 2 wouldn't see which way a Disco 3 went 'on road'. The Disco 3 would leave it for dead.

well I dunno about that.. mine does 70mph... a disco 3 can't go any faster than that..

plus it tends to be disco threes I overtake on the motorway all the time, presumably cos their old men drivers still think their brains will explode if they go over 25...

:behindsofa:

Hmmmm.

Land Rover quote the top speed of the TDV6 as being 112mph, so it should sit all day long at 100mph cruise.

The RR Sport, which is based on the Disco3, tops out at 140mph.

Suspension set up, brakes and the entire dynamics of the Disco 3 are light years ahead of the agreculteral(sp?), Discos 1 & 2. Trust me, not only on a motorway would you not see which way a Disco 3 went, but on a typical 'B' road, the differances would be embarasing for the Disco 1 or 2 driver.

My TD5 GS will sit at 85(on sat nav.) all day long. Unless some idiot in a girly car(you know the ones - built in Germany and with a 3 point star on the front) gets in my way doin' 68. I don't care whether people think mine is not a 'proper landy'. 'cos it is to me and that's all that matters. Mind you after joining in on here I am considering getting an old 'un to do a bit of splashing and crashing.

nope.. a tdv6 without blue flashing lights on the top should sit at 70mph or lower all day long

and the sort of old men that drive them round here sit at 25mph on the b roads, presumably because if they go faster than that their hearing aids will fall out...

admittedly I don't generally see where they go to keep up cos I burn them off at the first opportunity...

and RR sports... hmm.. not so many footballers wives round here so they aren't an issue....
