Is removing EGR such a good idea

I've done the search and not found any reason to fear EGR removal so went ahead and took it out last night. However was talking to a mech. engineer in work this morning and he had some concerns about EGR removal, particularly in diesel engines, which I'd not previously heard. He had previously always taken EGRs out of his cars but had changed his mind on it.

His point was that the recycled exhaust gases cool the combustion as they introduce low oxygen air to the mix. The fuelling is mapped accordingly so if running on only fresh air the oxygen content is raised and combustion will be hotter. This would suggest that EGR removal would unwittingly increase combustion temperature and increase wear, for example in the turbo.

My first reaction was some concern but then considering that Land Rover engines are over cooled thanks to the big viscount fan, and not excessively tuned maybe its not an issue.

Any thoughts?

I normally blank / remove mine but have never noticed any difference to anything - mpg, exhaust smoke, temperature, increased wear and tear - none of it, it all stays the same as far as I've seen.

I still do it though, just on the off chance that I'll save a little bit of fuel - it's not cheap these days!

My opinion is that the egr is and emission control device and that doesn't operate continously.
Secondly it is a compression ignition engine and the cooling effect would be hardly anything.

My opinion is it is best disabled

egr does lower burn temp but for emission reasons not that eng will be effected ,the non egr 300 tdi dont go through pistons or turbos anymore than egr 300s ,egr cokes inlet manifold and valves ,as it reduces o2and so max power from fuel it doesnt operate at full power ,egr reduces nox emissions but increases soot hc,co ,co2 and acid

Thanks for the replies. Given how common a mod this is I'd have been surprised if there were any notable ill effects but was curious to get some feedback. After-all, just because everyone says you should do something doesn't make it a good idea ...

Mine's a TD5 by the way.

Yes, my TD5 is as landrover produced it, no mods whatsoever. It pulls well, returns 27/30mpg and generally runs perfectly at 110k miles.
I think a lot of owners on here, as you say, convert for the sake of it because others say you should and then post results looking thro "rose tinted spectacles".

:)removed EGR from 2002 Disco ,car had 99,000 miles on the clock , drove to Spain with 1850kg caravan and loaded car, same journey as last six years car pulled up hills in one higher gear than previous years, and better fuel consumpton. ( wife commented on how well car was running, I had not told her what I had done) I took EGR off the day she is at her mothers. The Disco has alot more go in it now, cant be bad.

it does clog the manifold something ridiculous, didnt fancy all that going into the engine, so I removed it aswell, cant say it has done anything to the MPG though.
