Is my battery powerful enough?

My car is an auto 2005 Range Rover sport 2.7d 109000miles

I have had my battery recently replaced by an auto electrics company, who have fitted a ‘banner p8820 88Ah’. As the weather has got colder I am noticing starting is problematic with error codes flashing up but then going away soon after (for things like hdc). Also the lcd display is flickering slightly. The car has also developed a rough idle at startup which goes away as soon as the car is warm (I was suspecting glow plugs, but then remembered how sensitive range rovers are to correct voltages and thought this might be worth a look). I have also got a recent parking sensor fault as well!

battery was fitted in September and has always had the strange error messages appear fleetingly on startup since.

the battery is still new and under warranty and if is underpowered for the car should not have been fitted anyway! Hoping this will solve all my problems - I may be being optimistic . Cheers in advance for any advise

Hello and welcome:)
first off edit your location close is good enough
normally on any range rover the bigger the battery capacity the better 88ah sounds small, normally people put in an 120ah 1000cca
if the battery is small with low cca as you start the car the starter takes all it can get leaving nowt left for the other ecu`s which then throw up a fault as volts were low, so the biggest most power full you can shoe horn in there.

thanks for that, I thought in might be a bit weak. It has managed ok but with the occasional warning on startup. Do you think it could also contribute to the rough idle on startup? Also, do you think it’s acceptable to try and return the car to the auto electrics garage which fitted the battery in September?

Thanks very much for the help, I will change my location now. Cheers

I dont know about the idle bit, what size battery does the book say , you could try taking it back nowt to loose there.

Welcome:)

That sounds abit light for your car. Check what your manual says, take it back and get them to replace it, FOC with the correct 1, pay abit more and make it bigger betterer.
As above biggest you can fit is best.

The book says 90ah. But I don’t know about any other battery specifications, when I have searched for compatible batteries for my model car they all suggest 95ah and above.

I've got a 644 battery on mine got it from a agricultural specialist it a 95ah with 1000 cca and that does the trick RRs need a good amp battery on as they have so many electrical parts
as for taking it back as long as it under warranty they should replace it just explain to then the size battery you need

Thats what came up when i did a search too
Battery for LAND ROVER Range Rover Sport (L320) 2.7 D 4x4 - from 02.2005 190 hp buy cheap online (onlinecarparts.co.uk)
So the guy who sold you it sold you the wrong 1 take it back for a refund:)

thanks mate. I will try. If the car is just managing to run on the correct voltages maybe it might explain a intermittent cruise control issue I have as well? I’m hopeful now it’ll sort the rough startup as well - fingers crossed.

cheers

I only bought the car in the summer. I don’t know when the glow plugs were done. I did suspect these first as the colder it is the worse the starting is, but yesterday when the glow plugs were heating the car made a continual ticking sound, similar to a relay, which went off when the plug light went off. It sounded to me as something might be struggling, which is why today I am suspicious of the battery.

So New battery it is if it dont fix it put the resulting question in the correct section, so while we wait can we have some Pics of said offending car:D:D

Cos that usually what we like here:D

start with the battery first you might find will all the other faults might just go or stay as it is a RR after all

88ah sounds small for a diesel.
I got caught out with a battery that failed without warning, the day i was going to watch motogp at Silverstone! I had to buy from halfords as i didn't have much choice.
When i got home, i checked the battery out, gave it a full charge overnight and next morning it settled down to 12.4v so i went to the shop to complain and they said there was nothing wrong with it :(

+ 1 for the battery size/vehicle application.
I think you'll find that a fully charged 12v battery will be 12.4 to 12.7v

I sometimes wonder if many of these posts about dodgy batteries are because the vehicles are not being driven enough for the battery to get a decent charge. Modern cars with so many electric gadgets take a fair whack out of batteries, especially in the winter, if the car is only being used to pop to the shop then it is understandable that the battery will soon fail to do what it was meant to. I'm forever telling my wife to turn everything off before she turns on the ignition, I get in her car, turn on the ignition and the lights come on, the heater comes on etc, etc. There is only so many sparking pixies in a battery and most people seem to waste them

you have a valid point about modern cars the thing with RR is the p38 isn't modern and if you have trouble with the BECM not sleeping it will cause battery drain you could drive it every day but if the BECM is not sleeping when it should it will keep something running hence the reason for the dud batteries
