Is it really worth it?

I've been following a 200tdi engine on fleabay for the last couple of days to replace my perfectly running (53k) miles on the clock TD. After reading the nightmare of a job to fit the tdi into my landy, I have to ask, cos the wife will!! Is it really worth the hassle. Should I drive my TD until it dies and then replace it? or buy one now, ready for the inevitable destruction!
Thanks,
Jon

what makes you think it's a nightmare of a job to change the engine ?

if you are kitted up it can be in and out and back on the road within 3 days

oh and if you can find a known good 200 engine for about £200 buy it cos sooner or later the TD will go pop

I only really get 1 or 2 hours of an evening to play, what with work during the week and looking after the kids at the weekends.

Nothing has been a real nightmare, as the problems we have encountered were not logged in anyone elses notes i.e. the hidden bellhousing bolt, reading the flamin' Land Rover manual to find out that you need to drop the engine off its rubber mountings to get to that bolt, and that every Landy is different so expect things like the exhaust not to fit, the wiring to be wrong and all the hoses and pipes and nuts and bolts to be strange sizes! :D

I'll tell you if it is all worth it when I get it back on the road, hopefully next week. It's well worth it as an engineering experience.

And it's very worth it if you can get a 200Tdi Disco for £300 or less!

A few weeks ago I was sure that I would have to get myself a 200tdi and have a go at a transplant due to what I thought were terminal problems.
Now I've got my 2.5 td engine running like a dream, I will keep it well serviced and maintained and wait until it goes pop. I still think that a transplant will happen one day and I will always keep a look out for the perfect 200 tdi engine. (You know, the disco bought new and only used on school runs with
25 k on the clock but with a badly damagedchasis and body) in my dreams.
So until then i am happy with my old 2.5 td

that's probably the worst engine you could buy - lots of short runs will put much more wear on the components than say 150K of motorway miles

Go an have a drive in a 200tdi engined landy. Anything will do, 90, 110, disco anyhting. Then ask yerself again if it's worth it. The answer will be clear.
