went down a lane that is a byway between cross lane and red hill lane near Elkesley nottinghamshire grid ref sk670744 taken from os landranger map 120, at the end (Elkesley ford) there is a wood that as been used by 4x4's looks very well used. I was wondering if it is legal to go on it? is it part of the lane?

No its not legal to go off the track.

There is an on-going Police 'watch' on that area. The Byway is fine, the Ford is fine, DON'T go up the river, or off the Byway/lane, or into the woods.
