Ird???

Just had a look at the uj on the prop and it all looks ok apart from the gaitor.
Just a thought but would like your comments, as it seems the engine mounts have knackered do you think that as i pulled away from the traffic lights that the engine moved and caused the cv joint to pop out of its cup and break the gaitor?

The joint is a sliding type which allows for movement of the engine/gearbox/ird as a one piece item. When you start the engine, start to rev when stationary or apply/remove power when driving... the engine will move a bit. If the mounts supporting the engine/gearbox/ird allow too much movement (when they is broke'd) then this could pull the front prop uj connection further forwards than it would normally like/allow, causing it damage. The other end of the prop it stationary as it's screwed to the vcu which is held steady by the vcu mounts. If these are undamaged and not bent, then engine/gearbox/ird movement would be my guess. Can't remember when someone last had his problem. You need to get the engine mounts replaced if they is broke'd.

If you remove the props/vcu then you can run it front wheel drive. You will need to tell yer insurance.
 
Props and vcu removed, think they were steadying the engine as now off the engine has too much movement
 
Hi, sorry to open up an old thread. but i cant seem to find any others on here. i have a slight oil leak from where the prop goes into to IRD, looking for suggestions, could it just be the oil seals and if so can it be done on a drive way?
 
Yes I think you can replace that oil seal fairly easily. If I've got that wrong others will be along soon and correct that. Before you start you will need to drain the IRD's oil. But first you must loosen the fill plug - they are notoriously tight! Use a six sided 19mm socket as it won't turn and round the fill plug. Those plugs are a fairly soft metal and are easily 'rounded' by the standard 19mm multi hex sockets.

Look carefully at the oil when it comes out - it will give clues as to the IRD's condition internally. It should be a goldie / brown oil. If it has a silver sheen / metallic particles in it there's problems. Do the OWUT [One Wheel Up Test] first to see if the VCU is stiffened... The drain plug has a magnet on it. It's common to have a slight fuzz sticking to it and clear oil.
 
Thanks that's loads of help!! i don't suppose you know what type of oil it is?! am i right in thinking its the MTF 94 the same as the gear box? cheers for your advice again.
 
No, it's 75W/90 [api GL5]. I use the Penrite product "Pro Gear" 75W/90. The g'box uses an unusual oil, Texaco MTF94. Again I use a Penrite oil:"Trans Gear" 75W/80 which meets the LRMTF94 requirement.
