hey guys just after some help was driving today and my car started whining then my car started slowing down i pulled over to find the ird red hot, oil everywhere and the driveshaft has smashed the casing, the car will hardly move now just onto a trailer what could of caused this? can you replace the casing by the drivers side driveshaft without replacing the whole ird? are there any guides on here to changing the ird?

hi Andy-lots of articles on here regarding your problem.
may have been caused by new front tyres or a seized viscous coupling
another likely culprit is bearing failure in older ird units-what year is yours?
also check your driveshaft on drivers side-it may have destroyed ird casing due to excess wear/lateral movement in your cv joint

LRO magazine this month have a nice article on how to change your own Ird unit

couldnt find any info on Ashcrofts site i just need to know if the l series is the same as a td4 or 1.8 petrol few people saying there the same apart from v6 model
