Anybody out there ever stripped and overhauled an IRD I'm wondering wether to do mine to sort out the usual daft oil leaks and so while its out and in bits was going to get a bearing kit and replace them. Is it something you can do in your garage or is it a leave well alone thing, any advice welcome

I did mine this week. Its a doddle if you know what your doing and you have the gear to do it with. Have you got a 10 ton press,36mm socket,a large adjustable, torque wrench, £76 + postage for a new oil cooler plate (you wont get the old one out without damaging it) and the savy to get bearings off that have been put on that are not meant to come off. The crown wheel bearing is a pain in the arse. Im lucky in the fact i have a multi million pound workshop at my disposal with a 70 ton press, all the bearing pulling equipment you could possibly need and a -40 degree freezer to shrink the crown wheel shaft with. Apart from that its easy.

Where is the oil leaking from? If its from the drive shaft or pinion oil seals then you can do them without even removing the IRD. And to be honest m8, the pain is getting the box out and in again. If it aint broke then why try to fix it.

Well, if it's that easy then I might do mine at lunchtime just for fun

cheers for that, I've got the 36mm socket and the torque wrench and as for a 10 ton press well 14lb sledge and a piece of pipe,we'll see how it goes.
