ird low grating sound

Hi all
Just started to notice a noise towards the front and underneath of car in the area of the ird. It increases and decreases with road speed and noticeable till i come to a stop. Does not increase or decrease with gear change. Its not a whine more of a low grating sound but no vibration to speak of. Ive had the car running with all four wheels off the ground and its defo coming from around the ird. Doesnt seem to be any bearings on view that are knackered and VC seems to be ok. Done usual checks ie jack one wheel of floor etc. No oil leaks from ird.
Just checked a few posts and the pinion bearing might seem a good bet. It says pinion is stand alone. Does this mean it can be taken it out without removing the ird. Is it easy to take off? Can these bearings be bought without buying all the ird bearings? Does it need any presses to release the bearings. Is it a diy fix? Is the ird full rebuild a diy possibility?

Have you ruled out your transmission ?

have you topped up your ird and transmission ?






















Have you used the search option?

Drain the IRD into a clean white receptical and examine for wear debris. Failed bearings show as small silvery particles, gears are usually larger pieces.

Dont think its transmission as if i take out of gear when moving the noise seems to be in proportion to the road speed, as it slows down and stops when it comes to a stand still with engine still running. Will drain the ird oil and check for nasties.
