Hi All,
Earlier this year we had the IRD oil changed in the Freelander as the filler plug was loose and weeping,
all has been well since, on returning to the house after walking the dog this evening we saw some drips
of oil on the floor under the front of the Freelander, on closer inspection it looks like the drain plug is now letting buy,
I purchased the correct parts from Land Rover and watched the fellah fit them, is there anything that can be added to secure the bolt even better,

Someone else's picture but it shows the Bolt..ours and the surrounding area is covered in Black oil,

I have every intention on taking it back to the place that did it but I was just wondering if you guys fit anything else to secure it in place??
Is there a torque setting for this bolt??

Thanks as always for all your advise..

First off - if the IRD oil was changed not so long ago it shouldn't be black.

When I first changed mine at 80K it wasn't dirty looking.

Are you sure this isn't engine oil leaking from somewhere else and running down to the lowest point? - That'll be jet black.

The filler plug torque is 35Nm - if your still using 'old-timer' units or have an antique torque wrench it's 26lbf ft. ;)

I didn't see it myself,
The better half said that she touched it with her hand and then showed me it was black oil,
she did say it didn't seem loose,
but how would the engine oil travel that far??
where should I look for leaks then??
are there any obvious points these Td4's spring leaks from??

Cheers for the advise..

Unfortunately I know nothing as to whether or not the M47 is prone to oil-leaks or not - mine certainly isn't at 115K.

However leaks of any kind will always of course drip from the bottom of the engine unit.
Also bear in mind that any fluid will generally be blown back a bit by the air-flow.

I would be checking the obvious first - oil-filter housing - engine oil-filler cap - and the engine drain-plug.

But if you find nothing evident then I'd be cleaning the whole engine down and then checking it after a run and then again every day until the source becomes clear.

You might well have to drop the engine under-tray to get a good look.

Good luck.

Cheers mate,
under tray will be coming off this weekend,
hopefully the cause will be obvious once accessible..

Thanks as always..

There should be a copper washer which compresses a bit to stop the ird drain leaking by sealing it betterer.

it looks as though you have put a plastic washer on correct me if I am wrong but that's what is looks like ,also by the look of it your leek is coming from above .

Thanks for the replies but I think that as Sing said it is coming from the engine somewhere,
I will get the under belly of and take some pics on mine to show what it is like...

Just hoping its something simple,
this car is eating money at the moment..
its just one thing after another..
