Hi, first post but been using the forum for ages....

Background:-Hole in underside of IRD; hence will no-longer work as designed ie: drive! (long story! my garage fecked up!)

Model:-Freelander1 TD4 2001 model

Help:-Can I just remove the IRD entirely?

Reason:-Unsure that just the blanking plate method will suffice due to the hole on the underside of the IRD (appox 1x2 inches) I suspect without further inspection that the the gear inside are buggered*

Any help on this will be massively appreciated, I really don't want to replace the IRD unit due to expense and that there isn't much life left in the car, but for a few more years in 2wd will give me a few more years of happy motoring! (hopefully)

Cheers JB

You need the IRD to drive the vehicle - doesn't matter if it's 4WD or 2WD it's still needed.

If the garage wrecked it then they should put it right. Was it working well in 4WD before breaking the IRD case?

Thanks guys for the info.....

Looks like I'll be hunting for a cheap IRD or scrapping the car.

The history is this, I replaced the clutch (which took ages...massive job) and then didn't remove the IRD oil filler nut before reassembling all the bits and bobs. (lesson learned!)Then when trying to remove the nut I rounded it,(ahhh sh!t) so I asked the garage whilst doing the MOT to help, they said they did it and filled it, I assume they did but one short trip later and bang....

Its going be major hassle sorting it out with the garage so its easier to just to take the knock! (sadly and painfully) And as its my brothers car I could just hand him the keys when he get back from Berlin next year:D

Again thanks for your help, love this site as I've used it many times and its be most helpful.:)

Here is a plan:

LAND ROVER FREELANDER TRANSFER BOX DIFF IRD UNIT = GEARBOX | eBay

Use the IRD, then tart the gearbox up with a good clean and some silver paint..then flog it on e-bay to recoup some money.

A tip from the Arthur Daley school of business.. ;)

Today appears to be the business school of London wide-boys.

I like how they say that unit will also fit a diesel - I suppose they are correct that it'll fit, and you'd have good gearing for off-road, but it would scream on the motorway and fall apart pretty quick.

Good suggestion though.

A twist on buy/sell if you're happy with 2WD... get a cheap 'broken' IRD - cos they usually go on the rear pinion, just make sure the splines are good, and bung that in. Then you can sell a working prop/VCU combo - which are always in demand.

People don't usually sell/advertise broken stuff - so look for someone breaking a car - cos its likely its being done cos the IRD's shot.

What ever you do - you WILL need a replacement IRD and if your willing to put a few hours in it is 'just' a case of removing the RH driveshaft from IRD, getting under the car and unbolting the unit. Plenty of instruction on here.

I thought it was the same IRD unit, and the gearbox sorted out the right ratios.

Cheap at Arf the price guvnor!..

Taxi!! ;)

My bad - yes bit misleading - should have said that their comments about the gearbox being interchangeable is a bit 'exaggerated'. IRDs are same.

Its all a bit confusing at the best of times.

So!, how do you fancy buying 25 slightly faulty clock radio's?

Nuffing wrong wiv them, except they dont always tell the time.

Only 50 quid, plus 150 quid shipping to NZ for you.

Nice little earner guv :D

I'll take you up on that, I've got a contact who wants to buy 25 radios and I can knock them out to him for £10 each :)
