Hello all.

My 1.8 k series freelander has developed an irritating fault. Every now and again the traction control warning light and the hill decent warning light come on but seem to go off again when I apply the brakes or handbrake. I recently had a bit of welding done on the exhaust for the mot and the welder didn't disconnect the battery. I've heard this can affect the ECU, does anyone think this might be the cause? Ideas on other potential causes gratefully received.

In theory. Welding will only affect components where current has passed through. If the ground clamp was placed near the item being welded, then no current will pass through the ECUs.
It'll be a loose or poor connection somewhere, or possibly a ring split or dirty.

Thanks for the replies, I had thought it might be one or the other but the fact that the lights went out when braking or using the handbrake made me wonder. I'll start by checking out the brake light switch but I would have thought if it was that, the handbrake wouldn't affect it.

no sure if there is a g sensor on the 1800 but if it has it will be next to the hand brake if you have done the hand break cables recently check the sensor is still attached properly to the wires
