Intermittent Headlight problem 2006 Defender TD5

Hi all,
Ive been chasing a headlight problem for several months now and need some help as its doing my head in. Occasionally (maybe 1 in 10 trips) the headlights switch themselves off as I'm driving along! somewhat scary if youre on a dark road.....They can come back on at any time and there's no pattern I can recognise. The only things that always work are the flash beam and the running lights front and back. The running lights and indicators I swopped out 6 months ago for LEDs as several bulb holders were corroded - dont know if thats relevent. Ive had the headlights out. checked for earth leakage, changed the pink relay behind the clocks. Both the headlight switch and the indicator stalk have power and look ok. I found another thread on here where the guy traced it to the indicator stalk but his wasnt intermittent which would make it a lot easier. I just spent 4 hrs dicking around today and the damn thing switched off twice while I was looking at it!! I heard the relay click as if the switch was activated by a ghost...... Looking at the diagrams I'm supposed to have a headlight relay, a dip/dim relay and a resistor.....? All I can find is a pink relay behind the clocks though.... Missus needs the car tomorrow night for her meditation class.... I'm thinking of going with her for inspiration....

Thanks for this Mystery - I already had the wiring diagram.... what I'm missing is the physical location of the 2x relays and the resistor shown..... any pointers? I found a relay behind the clocks in the spaghetti but cant find the other 2 devices....

HAVE YOU LOOKED BEHIND THE CENTRE CONSOLE C282 OR IT MAY BE THE WIRING IS AS A 300TDI WHICH HAS ONE LIGHTING RELAY AND NO RESISTOR

Change the headlight relay in the main fuse box belpw the dash. Had the exact same thing in Jan.

Try the light switch itself, the brass studs wear away or fall off, I had it on my 2002 90.

Sorted - thanks to all especially Mystery for all the effort posting pics. The prize goes to Bankz for pinpointing the headlight relay in the passenger fuse box. By way of thanks, here's a couple of pics to help the next poor bastard with this problem.First is a diagram showing relay positions. Second is actual photo of my fuseboard which only has 3 relays as its a base model AND THE HEADLIGHT ONE IS IN POSN 3 NOT 4!!

Thanks for this. I have spent months replacing switches and looking for a loose connection. All I had to do was push the headlight relay 1/8 inch into the socket

Just goes to show what this forum is good for .... information, even 5 year old posts are still very relevant.
