Since I've had my 2000 diesel I've had a weird fault. Coming over the crest of a hill I'd lift off and the engine would cut out and I'd get GEARBOX FAULT on the dash. There is one road locally where I could almost guarantee that it would happen. Since I first posted about this others have reported the same issue but no-one has ever come up with a cure. Admittedly with no evidence I'd come to the conclusion that it was an electronic disagreement between the gearbox and the engine as to their relative speeds.
Well, about a month ago, my gearbox failed and I've had it totally refurbished. Since then I've not had the fault recur. I know that this is hardly positive proof but I have, quite deliberately, driven my own, personal problem road and tried to induce the fault but nothing. As I say, hardly proof but interesting and very satisfying.

If the engine cuts out whilst moving, you will always get a gearbox fault message as the input shaft stops and the output shaft keeps turning.
Curious though if the gearbox re-build cured the engine cutting out.

I had the same fault and the last time it happened the change patterns alteredand then the box failed completely except for reverse gear so i ordered a rebuilt box from ashcroft and fitted .have only donr 100 miles so far but no faults have shown although the chane speeds dont seem to be right so will have to run it as it is as im in Mongolia and have to be out of the country before my visa runs out'
So it looks like the fault is a warning that the box will fail . Having said that i did run it for 50 000 mile s with that intermittent fault.

As datatek said if the car is rolling you will get gearbox fault come up if engine stalls ,was your fuel low as mine stalls sometimes when the tank is very low I guess intank pump is failing .

Fuel level had no effect on it, I did the chippie run with a full tank but had the engine cut out twice. It was always downhill usually on a bend, I'd just lift off and suddenly no engine and the gearbox warning. On the lanes I was obviously travelling very slowly (I didn't want to embarrass the slower Defenders and tricked out Discos ;) ) but on the roads it's happened at reasonable speed.

It's certainly too early to claim a cure but I'm very happy at the moment not feeling that I've got to blip the throttle every time I lift off heading downhill.

Well if that's the case I'd say your injector is looming number 4 wait and see or the cps is about to fail
