This happens occasionally on my 1999 1.8 XEI,

The instruments will suddenly stop working, indicators make a buzzing noise from the fusebox and eventually the engine will stop.

try the key and the usual warning lights show but are very dim, keep trying the key and when the warning lights show bright it'll start.

any ideas anyone?

one thing to look at is the earth contacts in engine bay. if you look in the engine bay from front, left hand side up on the bulk head there is a block that all the earths go into. Some times you need to unbolt it clean the faces and refasten.

Had the same thing with mine put a new ignition switch on and you will be sorted £12ish if i remember right Genuine LR part

Cheers PaulT

Thanks for all the advice. One thing though, Where are you looking to get a price of £12ish? I cant find one for less than £45.
not that I'm tight........

Hi, I had a look around there is only one place I could find that sold genuine ones cheap @ Landrox 4x4 put in quick code 83749 and the switches are £13.90 inc vat! Havent used that site before but it claims the switch is a genuine part. Other than that, they seems to be around the £50 mark everywhere else. My local independent LR dealers, the main stealers, everywhere else seems to be about £50.

All sorted now, Tried that site and a word of warning. dont bother.
They had the part advertised at £13.90 so I bought it.

2 days later I get an email saying that the published price was a mistake and the real price was £54! I answered and told them they should honour the price advertised (pretty sure they cant do what they did) but had no reply.

Still no reply after 2 more emails so I cancelled the order and bought it elsewhere.

Now have my bank keeping a check on my card to see if they charge it.
