intermitent ign starter

hi i have been getting problem with ign starter,sometimes i put the key in ignition turn key nothing happens, try 2nd time & it turns over, it doesnt click like i have had on other cars in past which usualy means dodgy starter, just wondered have anybody else had this prob & is itr a common fault with freelander td4 2000 model. is there any way of testing for what the fault could be as i said at the start its interment, but noticed it nappears to be getting worse usualy in mornings now its getting colder & damper weather, any help would be appreciated..

dodgy switch??

does this mean i have to get new ign switch & key or is there a part u can buy that atatches to your existing ign barrell, & if so where is best place to buy & do you know how much aprox, & is it an easy job i can fit myself????

you can buy the back of the switch on its own at roughly £25 and it is a easy job to do,
simply remove the ign cowling and its 2 small philips screws
dont rule out the battery though as if its the original will have had its day by now try charging the night before

Had a similar problem on my TD4. Still happens occasionally.
Turn key, all ignition lights come on but it will not turn over.
Turns out it is a loose wire on the starter motor. The 12v feed to the solenoid. This is a spade connector on the front of the starter, push this firmly home and she now starts immediately.
Worth a try if all your ignition lights come on when turning the key but not turning over!

Yep I had this one damp morning, I turned the key and the instrument lights lit but nothing else happenned, no clicks just silence.
I put it down to the damp and sprayed WD40 fecking everywhere. Started fine after that. Could just be a damp connection.

... Or a gremmed up starter solenoid.

Luckily all the likely suspects are quite simple tasks!

i had this happen while away over the weekend, called the AA and he diagnosed the starter, which he bopped with a small hammer while i turned the key. this worked. i then had to repeat this action a few times from stopped, the fault comes and goes but i'll now check the wires on the starter motor before thinking of replacing it.

Had a similar problem.... auto electrician replaced solenoid and problem solved.
